Why Eid al-Adha doesn’t fall on the same date each year?

Unlike the Gregorian calendar most of the world uses, which is based on the sun, Eid al-Adha follows a lunar calendar, meaning it is based on the cycles of the moon rather than fixed solar dates.

Because a lunar year is shorter than a solar year, the timing of Eid shifts by about 10–12 days earlier each year in the regular calendar. This is why it can fall in different seasons over time, sometimes in summer, sometimes in winter.

So while the celebration always happens at the same point in its own calendar, its date in the global calendar naturally moves.
