HCC WARNS AGAINST ILLEGAL FARE HIKES AMID FUEL PRICE RISE

The Honiara City Council (HCC) wishes to clarify its position regarding the recent rise in fuel prices and its impact on public transport fares within the city.

HCC reminds all public bus and taxi operators that they must continue to charge the approved fares as set out in the existing gazette. Under the HCC Ordinance, the standard bus fare within Honiara is $3 for adults and $2 for students and children.

Any increase in fares without official approval is considered unregulated and unlawful. The Council acknowledges ongoing concerns that some buses are already charging up to $5, exceeding the approved rate.

This highlights enforcement challenges, and HCC admits that enforcement efforts need to be strengthened moving forward. With the recent increase in fuel prices, HCC understands that transport operators may feel pressure to raise fares.

However, fuel pricing is a national issue, and any changes to public transport fares must follow proper legal processes. HCC will engage with the national government to explore practical measures to manage fare adjustments and reduce the burden on both operators and commuters.

HCC also clarifies that there is currently no specific ordinance regulating taxi fares. However, any proposed increase must still be formally gazetted before it can be enforced.

The Council urges members of the public to assist by reporting any unlawful fare increases. If you encounter a bus or taxi charging above the approved rates, please take a photo of the vehicle and report it to the HCC Law Enforcement Office or call 26342.

The Honiara City Council yesterday, on the 20th April 2026, handed over 541 bags of rice to the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) to support communities facing difficult times.

The food supply, valued at $45,000 SBD, is part of the Council’s ongoing effort to assist families affected by current challenges.

The rice will be transported to Western Province to support communities affected by Cyclone Maila. This assistance aims to help families currently struggling to meet their daily food needs due to the cyclone's impact.

Speaking during the handover, Honiara City Council Lord Mayor, Councillor Eddie Kasuteé Siapu, acknowledged the important role of NDMO in coordinating response efforts and delivering assistance to those who need it most. He thanked NDMO for its strong leadership and continued commitment to supporting communities across the country.

The Council said this support reflects a shared responsibility to care for people, especially the most vulnerable. Many families are facing hardships, and this assistance will provide some relief during this difficult time.

The Honiara City Council also called for continued cooperation between the government, development partners, stakeholders, and communities. Working together is important to ensure that assistance is delivered effectively and reaches those most in need.

The Council emphasized that unity is key during times of hardship. By standing together and supporting one another, communities can respond more effectively and recover stronger.

The Honiara City Council remains committed to working closely with NDMO and partners to support all Solomon Islanders.

LIGHTING THE WAY: VURA WARD SHINES BRIGHTER WITH NEW SOLAR STREET LIGHTS

Honiara City Councillor for Vura Ward, Councillor Rolland Konai, continues to demonstrate strong and proactive leadership through the successful delivery of solar-powered street lights to four communities: Green Valley, Vura Two Heights, Vura 1 Heights, and Zion Mud Land.

This important initiative aims to improve safety and security across these communities by lighting up previously dark and vulnerable areas. The installation of the solar street lights is expected to help deter unwanted activities while creating a safer environment for families, children, and residents moving around at night.

A total of 33 solar panel street light posts have been installed, at a cost of just over $30,000. This investment reflects Councillor Konai’s ongoing commitment to addressing the practical needs of his constituents and enhancing the quality of life within the ward.

Speaking on the project, Councillor Konai emphasized that access to proper lighting is essential for community wellbeing.

He noted that the initiative not only improves visibility but also fosters a greater sense of safety, unity, and confidence among residents.

Community members have welcomed the project, expressing gratitude for the positive impact it will have on their daily lives. The solar-powered system also supports environmentally friendly solutions by using renewable energy.

This milestone project marks another step forward in building safer, brighter, and more resilient communities within Vura Ward.

HCC AND SINU SIGN MOU TO STRENGTHEN WASTE MANAGEMENT AND LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES

The Honiara City Council (HCC), through City Clerk Mr. Justus Denni, has expressed sincere appreciation to Solomon Islands National University (SINU) Pro Vice Chancellor (Acting), Dr. William Parairato, and his team for their strong cooperation in making the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) a success on 14 April 2026.

Speaking on behalf of HCC, Mr. Denni said the partnership reflects a shared commitment to improving waste management and building local capacity.

He acknowledged the close collaboration between SINU and the HCC Waste Management Division, which led to the successful signing of the agreement at SINU’s Kukum Campus in Honiara.

The MOU focuses on key areas including research, capacity building and training, student engagement and learning, infrastructure development and innovation, policy and advisory support, and community outreach.

Mr. Denni highlighted that, as head of HCC’s administration, he is confident the partnership will strengthen the Waste Management Division’s ability to address important local challenges such as waste management, urban planning and design, sustainable development, and disaster resilience.

He further noted that the agreement will create valuable opportunities for SINU staff and students through research projects, internships, and faculty exchanges. These initiatives are expected to enhance skills, build local expertise, and improve employment opportunities.

WASTE MANAGEMENT PROJECT LAUNCHED AT STHM, SINU IN PARTNERSHIP WITH HCC

The School of Tourism and Hospitality Management (STHM) at the Solomon Islands National University has officially launched a new waste management project in partnership with the Honiara City Council Waste Management Division.

The project aims to promote sustainable waste practices among students and staff while strengthening environmental responsibility within the tourism sector.

Over the past two weeks, Japanese Overseas Cooperation Volunteers (JOCV) from HCC’s Environmental Health Division have been conducting awareness sessions at the school. Madam Christina Kafukese Ariki and Head of School Madam Emarlyn Hiele supported these sessions. The training focused on waste challenges in Honiara, relevant laws and ethical responsibilities, and the importance of proper waste management in tourism.

A total of 283 students and staff participated in 10 sessions. Participants not only learned theory but also took part in practical activities based on the 3R principles: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. These activities helped build a better understanding of how waste can be managed effectively in both daily life and future workplaces.

JOCV volunteer Mifuyu Abe expressed hope that the project would become a model for other schools and faculties. She said the initiative could be expanded across SINU to strengthen environmental awareness at a wider level.

Madam Christina highlighted that teaching tourism students about waste management and the Global Code of Ethics in Tourism is very important. She said this knowledge will help students contribute to sustainable practices in the tourism industry. She also noted two key goals: to include waste management in the tourism curriculum and to establish proper waste systems at STHM as a model for the university.

Madam Emarlyn Hiele said the project is the first of its kind at the school. She thanked HCC for the partnership and said the program will help improve attitudes and behavior toward waste management among students and staff.

From Weeks 8 to 14, the school will begin a trial phase where waste will be separated into three categories: food waste for composting, recyclables like plastics and cans, and general waste for landfill. This will position STHM as a leader in environmental responsibility at SINU.
