𝐌𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐢𝐭𝐚 𝐑𝐨𝐚𝐝 𝐔𝐩𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐬 𝐌𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐂𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐨 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐟𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬.

The Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID), through the Second Solomon Islands Roads and Aviation Project (SIRAP2), with support from the World Bank, has completed community consultations ahead of major road improvement works in Malaita Province.

The consultations brought together MID, the SIRAP2 Project Support Team, Egis Asia, contractors, provincial authorities, landowners, community leaders and residents along the project corridors.

Discussions focused on:
🔹 Upcoming road works and implementation timelines
🔹 Environmental and social safeguards
🔹 Traffic management arrangements
🔹 Community participation and local employment opportunities

The contractors, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) and Trades Transformation Company Limited (TTCL), are now finalising their Contractors’ Environmental and Social Management Plans (CESMPs). Once approved, mobilisation and construction preparations will begin.

🛣️ North Road – CCECC
Approximately 12 km of bituminous sealing from the Gwaunaru’u Airfield Junction to the Kwaisuliniu Road Junction.

🛣️ East Road – TTCL
Approximately 21 km of routine maintenance and regravelling from Baratolo to Atori.

MID Permanent Secretary Mr. Mike Qaqara said the consultations are an important step in ensuring communities are informed and engaged before construction begins.

“These road improvement works are an important investment in Malaita’s transport infrastructure and will bring significant benefits to communities along the North and East Road corridors.”

The upgrades are expected to provide safer and more reliable road access, improve connectivity to markets, schools, health facilities and government services, and create employment and business opportunities for local communities.

MCA Permanent Secretary Alwyn Danitofea said the evaluation process is an important step towards moving the project forward.

“It is important that the evaluation is completed in accordance with the required procurement procedures to ensure that the most qualified contractor is selected.”

🏗️ 𝐇𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐚𝐫𝐚 𝐀𝐢𝐫 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐥 𝐓𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫 – 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐔𝐩𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐞.

Works on the Honiara Air Traffic Control Tower are progressing well, with a major milestone achieved on Saturday, 29 August 2026.

✅ Concrete casting for the 5th-floor columns, beams and final roof slab at the VCR level has been completed.

✅ Starter bars for the ATM antennas and equipment were installed ahead of the roof slab casting.

✅ Ground-floor blockwork is nearing completion, while blockwork continues on the 1st and 2nd floors.

The steady progress brings the project another step closer to completion and will contribute to improved air traffic management and aviation safety at Honiara International Airport.

Construction of the new Air Traffic Control (ATC) Towers at Honiara International and Munda Airports is progressing well, with significant milestones achieved on the structural works.

The projects are being implemented by the Ministry of Communication and Aviation (MCA) under the Second Solomon Islands Roads and Aviation Project (SIRAP2), with financial support from the World Bank. Construction is being undertaken by China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), with Egis Asia providing supervision consultancy services.

📍 Munda Airport:
Major structural concrete works, including the roof slab of the Visual Control Room (VCR), have been completed. The building is now progressing into the finishing stage, with plastering works underway on the ground and first floors.

📍 Honiara International Airport:
The fourth-floor slab, beams, columns and staircases have been successfully completed. Preparation and scaffolding works are now underway for the fifth and final level, including the inclined columns, beams and roof slab. Structural concrete works were targeted for completion by 25 August 2026.

MCA Permanent Secretary Alwyn Danitofea said the progress at both airports marks an important milestone for the Solomon Islands aviation sector.

“These facilities will strengthen air traffic management and improve the safety, efficiency and reliability of aviation operations.”

The new ATC Towers form part of SIRAP2’s broader investment in strengthening aviation infrastructure, improving operational safety and enhancing air traffic management capacity at key airports across Solomon Islands.

The Government, through MCA and with support from the World Bank, remains committed to ensuring these important facilities are delivered safely, efficiently and in accordance with the required technical, quality and international aviation safety standards.

✈️ 𝐀𝐯𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐱 𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐀𝐝𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐓𝐨𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧.

The Aviation Complex Building (ACB) at Honiara International Airport has reached 90% physical completion, with the project scheduled for completion on 31 August 2026.

Implemented by the Ministry of Communication and Aviation (MCA) under the Second Solomon Islands Roads and Aviation Project (SIRAP2), with support from the World Bank, the project is being constructed by China Railway Construction Engineering Group (CRCEG), with Egis Asia providing construction supervision.

As the project enters its final phase, works are focused on completing remaining mechanical, electrical, plumbing and external works, together with testing and commissioning, inspections, quality assurance and rectification of outstanding items.

The new ACB will provide modern and improved facilities for key aviation stakeholders, supporting more efficient and effective aviation operations at Honiara International Airport.

MCA Permanent Secretary Alwyn Danitofea said the 90% completion milestone demonstrates that the project has entered its final phase, while noting that important testing, commissioning, inspections and outstanding works remain before handover.

The ACB is part of SIRAP2’s wider investment in Solomon Islands’ transport infrastructure, including ATC Towers in Honiara and Munda, Suavanao Airfield upgrades, air navigation systems, regional airport maintenance, East Road rehabilitation, North Road sealing and the replacement of Fiu River Bridge in Malaita.

✈️ 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐑𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐀𝐢𝐫𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐀𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐭 𝐌𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐂𝐚𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐒𝐈𝐑𝐀𝐏𝟐.

The Ministry of Communication and Aviation (MCA), through the Second Solomon Islands Roads and Aviation Project (SIRAP2), with support from the World Bank, has successfully concluded the second Regional Airport Asset Maintenance Workshop in Honiara.

Held on Wednesday, 29 July 2026, the workshop brought together representatives from the Solomon Islands Airports Corporation Limited (SIACL) and was delivered by the SIRAP2 consultant, a Joint Venture between Gyros Corporation and Pacific Consultants Company Limited.

The workshop focused on strengthening capacity in the effective planning, management, operation and maintenance of regional airport infrastructure. Key areas covered included:

🔹 Asset Management Plan (AMP) approaches
🔹 Asset inventory development policies and processes
🔹 Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
🔹 Corrective Maintenance Plans (CMP)
🔹 Preventive Maintenance Plans (PMP)
🔹 Spare parts stock planning
🔹 Digitisation of asset inventories and management plans
🔹 Asset management tools, methodologies and capacity development strategies

Through presentations, discussions and practical knowledge sharing, participants gained valuable insights into how reliable asset data and improved management systems can support better maintenance planning, enhance operational efficiency and extend the lifespan of critical airport infrastructure.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Communication and Aviation, Mr. Alwyn Danitofea, emphasised the importance of strengthening asset management systems to ensure the long-term sustainability of Solomon Islands’ aviation infrastructure.

“Effective management and maintenance of our airport assets is critical to ensuring safe, reliable and sustainable air services throughout Solomon Islands. Through initiatives such as this workshop, we are strengthening the capacity of our institutions and improving the systems and tools needed to better plan, manage and maintain our aviation infrastructure for the benefit of our communities and future generations.”

The workshop is part of SIRAP2’s broader commitment to strengthening institutional capacity and improving the safety, sustainability and resilience of Solomon Islands’ aviation sector.

Munda Air Traffic Control Tower Progressing Steadily.

Construction of the new Munda Air Traffic Control Tower in Western Province is progressing steadily, marking another important milestone in the development of Solomon Islands’ aviation infrastructure.
A site visit was conducted today by the contractor, the SIRAP2 project team and Egis Asia, to assess the progress of construction and receive an update on the works underway. The visit provided an opportunity for the project stakeholders to inspect the site, discuss progress and identify any issues requiring attention as construction continues.

The establishment of the Community Advisory Committees (CACs) and training for the East and North Malaita roads have been completed. The contractor will mobilise to the project sites soon.

The Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID), through the Second Solomon Islands Roads and Aviation Project (SIRAP2), has reached another important milestone with the launch of the construction tender for the replacement of the Fiu River Bridge in Malaita Province.

The new bridge will replace the existing 77-metre steel truss bridge with an 84-metre climate-resilient bridge featuring a two-lane carriageway and a dedicated pedestrian walkway. The project will improve safety, strengthen resilience to flooding and extreme weather, and provide more reliable access to schools, health services, markets and communities.

Acting Permanent Secretary for MID, Mr. Mike Qaqara, said the Fiu River Bridge is a vital transport link for families, businesses and essential services, and that the tender marks another significant step towards delivering safer and more reliable infrastructure for Malaita Province.

The works tender was issued on 9 July 2026 and closes on 18 September 2026. The project is expected to be financed through the Second Additional Financing for SIRAP2, supported by the World Bank.

The Fiu River Bridge Replacement is one of several major transport investments under SIRAP2, which is improving roads, bridges and aviation infrastructure across Solomon Islands to strengthen connectivity, resilience and economic opportunities.
