When Uzbekistan joined ICD in 2004, Islamic finance was virtually absent from its private sector landscape . In 2011, ICD established Taiba Leasing — Uzbekistan's first-ever Sharia-compliant institution — and began building outward. Over the following years, partnerships with Asia Alliance Bank, Turonbank, Ipak Yuli Bank, Hamkorbank, KapitalBank, and Uzbek Leasing International created a national network of Islamic finance channels reaching SMEs across the country.
By 2022, ICD had signed USD 105 million in simultaneous agreements with four Uzbek banks. By 2024, the results were measurable: 5,000+ jobs created, 500+ leasing transactions completed, and USD 353 million in SME financing extended. In 2025, ICD led the closing of Uzbekistan's first-ever Sharia-compliant syndicated facility for AKLease marking the country's graduation from recipient to active participant in regional Islamic finance.
What began as a blank page in 2004 is today a complete ecosystem built institution by institution, over two decades of patient and purposeful development.
