Mihai Plătică’s large-scale work Birefringent Slow Glass Archive (2024) is featured in the exhibition ‘THE PICTURE. Explaining Photography in 39 Works’, on view Scânteia+.

The group show, proposed by Dani Ghercă and Horațiu Lipot, traces 35 years of Romanian photography through 39 works that reflect a wide range of artistic practices.

Inspired by the fictional concept of slow glass, a material through which light takes months or even years to pass, Mihai Plătică’s work is part of an exhibition chapter titled ‘The Image as Uncanny Gaze’.

The exhibition is on view through September 5.

Taking flight against the expansive background of a grid—Vlad Nancǎ's ‘Companion’ is informed by a large-scale mosaic on the façade of Café Moskau in Berlin.

“Flying is one of my recurring dreams,” confessed the artist in a recent interview with RFI Romania.

Think of it as a telescope directed toward new cosmic horizons. With the series of 10 works on paper ‘Dream Fragment’, Vlad Nancǎ extends his engagement with futures-thinking and his speculative scenario of relocating modernism onto another planet.

The titles themselves tell a story—from ‘Dream Fragment (Celestial Body)’ to ‘Dream Fragment (Peace)’. Come by to discover the entire series.

A montage of Romanian films from the 1960s, Vlad Nancǎ’s ‘Modern’ sutures together scenes of leisure, love and work set within the new buildings that emerged in Bucharest during that period.

In collaboration with film editor Cătălin Cristuțiu, the artist selected sequences from five feature films: Țărmul n-are sfârșit (dir. Mircea Săucan), Gioconda fără surâs (dir. Malvina Urșianu), Ultima noapte a copilăriei (dir. Savel Știopul), Șeful sectorului suflete (dir. Gheorghe Vitanidis), and Un film cu o fată fermecătoare (dir. Lucian Bratu).

Inspired by Mircea Săucan’s film ‘Țărmul n-are sfârșit’ and conceived for display in the gallery window—‘Sand Blocks’ by Vlad Nancǎ recreate two buildings from Floreasca.

The smaller structure is the low-rise building that houses Gaep. Built in the late 1950s, it reflects the first phase in the development of the district. The taller structure is one of the six identical apartment towers erected in 1963 near the lake, which marked a shift in how architects and political elites envisioned the city.

Come by to discover how the work creates a connection between the building and the park across the street.

Deliberate result: bringing to mind a contemporary “weeping icon”. In Vlad Nancǎ’s ‘Salina’, the image of a mineworker, drawn from a mosaic in Vulcan (Hunedoara county), is reinterpreted with an exaggerated, emoji-like tear.

“The idea of construction referenced in the exhibition title [Construction Time Again] is not about building more, but about imagining a different future. The game I've been playing for a few years now is imagining a future on another planet in an attempt to make things better. The subtext of this exercise is, of course, to look at how we do things on Earth now and how we should treat the planet we already inhabit.”—Vlad Nancǎ

View from the top. When visiting the current exhibition, make sure to take a look at this work from the mezzanine floor of the gallery.

The silhouettes recreate two scale figures featured on the cover of a 1957 issue of Arhitectura RPR (later Arhitectura). In Vlad Nancǎ’s ‘Builders’, they appear to emerge from an unprimed canvas.

The solo exhibition Vlad Nancă: Construction Time Again is on view through June 6.
