🇬🇧 𝗘𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝘀𝗰𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀: 𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆?
📣 Do you own an electric scooter? Find out when third-party liability insurance may be required.
Under Decree-Law no. 26/2025, mandatory insurance applies to certain motorised vehicles that:
✅ Have a designed maximum speed above 25 km/h; or
✅ Weigh more than 25 kg and have a maximum speed above 14 km/h.
Electric scooters with a motor of up to 0.25 kW, limited to 25 km/h, are generally treated as bicycles and are not normally subject to compulsory motor insurance.
⚠️ 𝗣𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗲:: some more powerful scooters, especially those purchased through online platforms, may fall under the mandatory insurance rules. Some models may also be prohibited from being used on public roads.
Before using your scooter, check:
🔹 Motor power;
🔹 Designed maximum speed;
🔹 Net weight;
🔹 Whether third-party liability insurance is mandatory;
🔹 Whether the scooter is legally authorised for use on public roads.
📌 When in doubt, don’t take risks. Ask for a review of your scooter’s technical specif**ations and confirm whether insurance is required
