Applications now open for the second edition of Startup the Future, Galp Upcoming Energies' global open innovation program. Until September 10th, startups and scale-ups from all regions are invited to present innovative solutions that accelerate the energy transition Galp is fully committed to.

Participants have the opportunity to choose from five modules to compete in:

Managing Data: aimed at maximizing flexibility and covering reliably the fluctuating energy needs in order to transition successfully to clear energies.

Scaling Energy Storage & Environmental Processes: Ideas to reduce the impact of company’s operations on the environment and hardware solutions that enable the transition to more sustainable energy systems.

Decarbonizing & Optimizing Industry: A module focused on industrial efficiency, systems monitoring, heat decarbonization and consumer-targeted battery solutions.

Bringing Energy to Everyone: Fighting energy poverty and facilitating access to energy to underdeveloped communities.

Harnessing Electric Mobility: Developed in partnership with the BMW Group, this module seeks to accelerate electric mobility solutions and fleet optimization services.

The projects include a 270 ktpa advanced biofuels unit, in partnership with Mitsui, and 100 MW of electrolysers for the production of green hydrogen. Both units are expected to have its first start up during 2025.

“These projects are some of the largest of their kind, representing an overall investment of c.€650 m. This is a significant contribution to the launch of the new industries of the future in Portugal, placing Galp at the forefront of the development of low carbon solutions necessary for the energy transition. The decisions are based on the expectation that the fiscal and regulatory developments in Portugal will not hinder the success of such large-scale investments.” - Paula Amorim, Chairwoman

Demolition works on the old Matosinhos Refinery, located in the northern Portuguese city of Matosinhos, will begin on October 23rd. The overall duration of this phase is estimated at two and a half years.

This will be the most visible aspect of decommissioning and dismantling the old Refinery, a process that began approximately two years ago. Throughout this period, a wide range of preparatory operations were implemented, including the safe shutdown of the process units, the cleaning and degassing of process units, equipment, and pipes to ensure the elimination of hydrocarbons and related products. Once dismantling is complete, the environmental soil rehabilitation phase will follow.

To prepare for the start of the demolition works, contacts and meetings were held with all the stakeholders directly and indirectly impacted in this project, such as the government, the Municipality of Matosinhos, regulatory and licensing bodies, civil protection, and local authorities, as well as residents and trade associations in the area surrounding the refinery.

Global energy storage platform provider Powin LLC and Galp, Portugal’s leading integrated energy company, have partnered to install a utility-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) at one of Galp’s solar power plants near Alcoutim, a small village in the country’s sunny southern region of the Algarve, where Galp operates several projects with a combined capacity of 144 MW.

This 5MW/20MWh battery system is Galp’s first move in the hybridization of its solar power production portfolio – which is one of Iberia’s biggest at close to 1.5 GW in operation. The batteries will allow Galp to store the solar energy produced in periods of high generation, and to deploy it during periods of high demand, maximizing the energy’s value.

Alcoutim is Powin’s inaugural project in Europe, which is poised to be a pivotal growth market for energy storage. This project and partnership, combined with Powin’s recently opened office location in Madrid, Spain, showcase the company’s commitment to support Europe’s energy transition goals.
