Decided this summer that next year is the year?

The move to Portugal actually begins at HMRC. Leaving the UK properly is its own project.

Form P85 tells HMRC you are going and starts the process of getting your residency status right.

The Statutory Residence Test determines when you stop being UK tax resident, and the timing of your departure against the UK tax year can meaningfully change your final bill.

Then come the questions people discover too late: what happens to ISAs once you are non-resident, how UK pensions are treated under the UK–Portugal double tax treaty, and what to do about UK property you keep.

Every one of these is easier to handle before departure than to repair afterwards.

She ran her design business from a Manchester flat for six years.

Now she runs it from Faro, entirely legally, and that last part is the point.

When a remote consultant approached us about the D8 visa, the work itself was the easy bit.

Her clients were in the UK and the US, her income comfortably cleared the 2026 threshold, and nothing about her business needed to change.

Working from your laptop in Lagos feels weightless.

Your tax position is not.

Plenty of remote workers extend a Portuguese summer into autumn without realising what is accumulating in the background.

Spend enough time here, or set up a habitual home, and Portuguese tax residency follows, bringing worldwide income into scope, including a UK salary.

That is not necessarily bad news.

Eligible professionals in qualifying roles may benefit from the IFICI regime, the incentive that succeeded NHR, with a 20% rate on qualifying Portuguese employment and self-employment income.

Healthcare is the question British retirees ask us second, right after tax.

The answer is more reassuring than most expect.

Portugal's public health service, the Serviço Nacional de Saúde (SNS), is open to legal residents who register with their local health centre.

UK state pensioners can apply for the S1 form, which entitles them to state healthcare in Portugal funded by the UK — a benefit many movers do not realise survives Brexit.

Most visa applicants also need private health insurance for the application itself, and many residents keep a private policy for faster specialist access.

The right combination depends on age, residency route and health needs, which is why healthcare planning belongs in the relocation plan, not as an afterthought.

In Portugal, August is less a month and more a national agreement.

Offices run on skeleton crews, half of Lisbon decamps to the coast, family restaurants pin handwritten closure notes to their doors, and nobody pretends otherwise.

It is one of the most endearing things about life here: a culture that still protects time for family, beach and long lunches.

For newcomers, it can be a surprise, especially anyone expecting a quick answer from a bank, a lawyer or a câmara in mid-August.

Our advice after years of Algarve summers: plan anything administrative for early in the month or for September, and spend the rest of it the way the Portuguese do.

The tax calendar, however, takes no holidays, and neither do we.
