رواق مركز المعمار الشعبي; Riwaq- centre for architectural conservation RIWAQ is a place for change, where heritage meets socio-economic-political development.

انطلق رواق عام 1991 عندما اجتمعت مجموعة من المتحمسين في جهد منظم لإنقاذ المباني التاريخية في فلسطين. تتمثل مهمة رواق في حماية وإعادة وتأهيل التراث المعماري والثقافي في فلسطين من خلال برامجها الرئيسية: برنامج الترميم، وبرنامج إعادة إحياء أهم 50 مركزاً تاريخياً، والبرنامج المجتمعي والثقافي. يساهم رواق في إنتاج ونشر المعرفة حول التراث من خلال برنامج البحوث والمنشورات، بما في ذلك سجل المباني التاريخية

في فلسطين، ويعمل بالتعاون مع الجهات الفاعلة الأخرى على بناء بيئة مؤسسية وقانونية مواتية

RIWAQ was set in motion in 1991 when a group of enthusiasts came together in an organized effort to save historic buildings in Palestine. RIWAQ’s mission is to protect, restore, and rehabilitate the architectural and cultural heritage in Palestine through its main programs; the Restoration Program, the Regeneration of the 50 Most Significant Historic Centers, and the Community and Cultural Program. RIWAQ contributes to the production and dissemination of knowledge about heritage through its Research and Publications Program including the Registry of Historic Buildings in Palestine, and works, in collaboration with other actors, on building a conducive institutional and legal environment. يقوم #رواق حاليا بترميم وتأهيل حوش عبد الرشيد خطاب في فرعون والذي يضم ثلاثة غرف وساحة. يهدف ترميم المشروع إلى توفير مقر لنادي فرعون الرياضي حيث سيضم المبنى مكتبة وقاعة متعددة الأغراض ومكاتب بالإضافة إلى الخدمات.
هذا المشروع هو بدعم سخي من الصندوق العربي للإنماء الاقتصادي والاجتماعي وبالشراكة مع نادي فرعون الرياضي ومجلس قروي فرعون وتنفيذ شركة سبيكترا للمقاولات.

is currently restoring and renovating the courtyard of Abdul Rashid Khattab in Faroun, Tulkarm, which includes three rooms and a courtyard. The restoration project aims to provide a headquarters for the Faroun Sports Club, where the building will house a library, a multi-purpose hall, offices, and other facilities.

This project is generously supported by the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development, in partnership with the Faroun Sports Club and the Faroun Village Council, and is being implemented by Spectra Contracting Company.

Our fourth 2026 Young Palestinian Architect Fellow is…

Hala Awadallah is an architect from Gaza currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Landscape Architecture for Global Sustainability at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU), where her work explores the intersection of architecture, landscape, and crisis-driven urbanism. Drawing from her experiences in Gaza and Norway, her research and design interests focus on reconstruction, public space, water systems, environmental justice, and nature-based approaches for resource-constrained cities. She holds a Bachelor of Architectural Engineering from the Islamic University of Gaza, graduating with distinction, where her thesis project Safe Haven proposed a post-war shelter, school, and cultural center for orphaned children. Hala’s experience spans architectural education, reconstruction initiatives, heritage preservation, and professional design practice, reflecting a strong commitment to socially responsive and community-centered design.

Our third 2026 Young Palestinian Architect Fellow is…

Waleed Ahmed is an architect who graduated from Birzeit University in 2023 and currently works there as a research and teaching assistant. His work explores and documents spatial injustice in Palestine through research and visual practices, including drawing, mapping, and spatial analysis. He is interested in developing critical and interdisciplinary approaches to architectural research. His academic and professional interests engage with the relationship between space, politics, and everyday life, examining how architecture can reveal and respond to broader social and territorial conditions. Through analytical and visual methods, he investigates the ways spatial systems shape experiences of place and influence communities. His work seeks to bridge research and design, using architecture as a tool for understanding complex realities and generating alternative perspectives. Waleed is particularly interested in the role of representation and critical inquiry in shaping more informed and socially engaged architectural practices across different social and political contexts today.

Our second 2026 Young Palestinian Architect Fellow is…

Banan Shbair is an architect from Gaza whose work focuses on humanitarian and field-based responses within displacement and post-crisis contexts. Through her experience in site management, monitoring and evaluation within NGOs, and shelter-related interventions, she has worked closely with displaced communities to improve temporary living conditions through safer and more adaptable housing solutions. Her interests center on post-crisis reconstruction, cultural heritage preservation, and human-centered design in fragile environments. Banan has also undertaken research and design studies on transitional housing strategies, examining how emergency shelters can evolve into long-term, community-oriented living environments. Grounded in both professional practice and lived experience, she approaches architecture as more than rebuilding physical structures—seeing it as a means to restore dignity, identity, and a sense of belonging for communities affected by crisis.

We are happy to announce our first 2026 Young Palestinian Architect Fellow 🎉

Amira Sayyad is a recent graduate in planning and design from Birzeit University based in Jerusalem. Her work explores memory, heritage, and the layered urban realities of Jerusalem through architecture, storytelling, and visual documentation. Interested in the relationship between space, identity, and lived experience, she approaches cities as places shaped by both physical environments and personal narratives. Alongside her academic work, Amira writes short stories and reflective pieces inspired by everyday life, city streets, and individual memory, treating writing as an extension of spatial practice. Through both visual and written forms, her work seeks to uncover overlooked stories and examine how people experience, remember, and connect to place, creating a dialogue between architecture, culture, and personal experience.

قام #رواق، بالتعاون مع الفنانة والمعمارية آية قرش، منسقة برنامج الهندسة المعمارية في جامعة دار الكلمة، بتنفيذ ورشتي عمل مع أطفال قلنديا البلد وطلبة دائرة الهندسة المعمارية في جامعة دار الكلمة، نتج عنهما إنتاج خمس قصص مصوّرة سيتم جمعها وطباعتها ضمن كتيّب خاص.

أُقيمت الورشتان بتاريخ 18 و25 نيسان، بهدف تدريب الأطفال على تطوير السردية وبناء الرواية القصصية من خلال الخيال والذاكرة والمكان. وقد عمل المشاركون على تأليف قصص تجمع بين الواقع والخيال، تستلهم تفاصيلها من قرية قلنديا البلد، ليتم لاحقًا تحويلها إلى قصص مصوّرة تعبّر عن رؤيتهم وتجاربهم بأسلوب بصري وإبداعي.

تأتي هذه الورشة ضمن مشروع تحت عنوان “التراث الإبداعي- قلنديا تنبض بالحياة من جديد” والذي يهدف إلى تسليط الضوء على البلدة القديمة بشكل خلص وعلى الريف المقدسي بشكل عام، بتمويل من مؤسسة جيردا هنكل

held two workshops in collaboration with artist and architect Aya Kirresh, coordinator of the architecture program at Dar Al-Kalima University, with children from Qalandiya village and students from the architecture department at Dar Al-Kalima University. These workshops resulted in the creation of five illustrated stories, which will be compiled and published in a special booklet.

The workshops, held on April 18 and 25, aimed to train children in narrative development and storytelling through imagination, memory, and place. Participants created stories that blended reality and imagination, drawing inspiration from the village of Qalandiya. These stories were then transformed into illustrated stories that express their vision and experiences in a visual and creative style.

These workshops are part of the project “Creative Heritage – Qalandiya Comes Alive Again.” The project focuses on highlighting the historic center of the village and the heritage of rural Jerusalem, with support from the Gerda Henkel Foundation.

يدعوكم مركز #رواق وبالتعاون مع المعماريين مصطفى سليم ومها مصطفى للمشاركة في مسار تفاعلي ممتع بعنوان "المكان فاضي مليان" يوم السبت الموافق 16-5-2026 في قلنديا البلد الساعة 5:00 مساء.
يهدف المسار إلى تجسير الفجوة بين حياة الأمس واليوم من خلال التنقل بين الأنوية الرئيسية التي كانت تشكل الحياة للقرية من خلال الاستعانة بكتيب تفاعلي مليء بالقصص والألغاز؛ التي تحملنا للعيش في ماضي هذه المحطات، بداية من النوادر بجانب قصر الحقية إلى البيار مع نزهة في طبيعة القرية تشمل عمل صاجية مع النباتات البرية التي سيتم حصدها من الأرض. حيث تأتي هذه الجولة ضمن مشروع #رواق “التراث الإبداعي- قلنديا تنبض بالحياة من جديد” بتمويل من مؤسسة جيردا هنكل
