Retiring from the federal government looks different than it used to.

The paper era is over — more than 95% of federal retirement applications are now filed and processed through OPM's Online Retirement Application (ORA). But a faster system still comes with things worth knowing before you begin.

Your agency HR starts your ORA, not you. TSP and Social Security are filed separately, through their own agencies, on their own timelines.

And elections like survivor benefits, FEHB, and FEGLI are made once — so it's worth understanding them fully before you submit.

At PWR Retirement Group, we walk federal employees through the ORA process, benefit elections, and what comes after — in English or Spanish. Reach out for a free educational session.

You retired. Your TSP didn't.

It's still invested, still moving, still governed by rules you no longer report to.

Most retired federal employees don't leave their TSP where it is because they chose to — it's because no one ever walked them through the alternatives. Staying in the TSP is a legitimate option. It just isn't the only one, and it isn't automatically the right one for how you plan to live.

After separation, every dollar has to answer to three things:
🔹 Taxes — when they're owed, and at whose rate
🔹 Access — how fast you can reach it, and on whose schedule
🔹 Legacy — who receives it, and in what condition

The question isn't "how much did it grow?" anymore. It's "what is this money supposed to do for the next 25 years?"

Swipe through, then bring your questions — we'll bring the options. No products. No pressure.

Retiring before 59½? If you're a federal employee separating in or after the year you turn 55, the TSP's age-55 rule may give you penalty-free access to your funds — a benefit that doesn't automatically travel with you if you roll those funds into an IRA first.

This post is about awareness, not a sales pitch. Before you move a dollar, it's worth understanding what you'd be keeping — and what you'd be giving up.

Walk your options before you move your money. 🧵

Your VA chart is changing systems. Your benefits aren't.

VA is retiring decades-old, facility-by-facility record technology and replacing it with a single Federal Electronic Health Record — the same system used by the Department of Defense.

What that actually means for you:

→ Your chart travels with you. Care at a different VA facility no longer starts from scratch.
→ Service-era medical history and VA care sit in one record.
→ Staff can book community-care visits directly instead of relaying calls back and forth.

Rollout is happening in regional waves — Michigan in April, Ohio and Kentucky in June, Indiana in August, Cleveland and Anchorage in October. More waves reach Wisconsin, Illinois, the Dakotas, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, Missouri, and the Pacific Northwest.

If your facility isn't listed yet, it will be. VA publishes each wave in advance and notifies patients directly before go-live. Expect a short adjustment period — earlier sites saw scheduling and prescription friction in the first weeks.

Three things worth doing now:

Download your records through your VA patient portal — prescriptions, referrals, test results.

Confirm your contact details. Outdated phone or email means missed notices.
Review the whole picture once. VA care, FEHB, TSP, and retirement timing interact.

What the rollout does not change: your VA health care eligibility and enrollment priority group, your disability rating and compensation, or your FEHB, FEGLI, TSP, and FERS entitlements as a federal employee. VA and OPM remain the sole authorities on eligibility.

New technology. Same entitlements. The question is whether you've ever looked at both benefit systems side by side.

Most people plan retirement looking straight ahead — same numbers, same assumptions, same blind spots.

What if you looked at it differently?

For federal employees, that view often stops at a TSP balance and a FERS estimate — without factoring in FEHB coverage after retirement, survivor benefit elections, or how your pension is actually taxed.

Real retirement planning means rising above the day-to-day and seeing the full picture: your income sources, your benefits, your timeline, your risks. That's where clarity starts.

See beyond today. Plan for the retirement you deserve.

The federal performance review just got rewritten.

OPM's rule (5 CFR Part 430) took effect Aug 6, 2026 — agencies must comply by Jan 1, 2027. Three changes worth knowing:

🔹 Level 2 rating eliminated — performance now sorts up or down
🔹 Top ratings (4 & 5) are capped agency-by-agency; forced distribution is back
🔹 Appeal rights narrow — no more mandatory higher-level review or grievance/arbitration of a rating of record

Your rating still follows you into RIF credit, QSIs, and promotions. It does not touch your FERS annuity, FEHB/FEGLI, or TSP.

Rules change. A plan built on what you control does not. Swipe through 👉
