“Insurance? Ipunin ko na lang yung pera.”

Fair point.

Let’s say you’re 30 years old, healthy, and you want ₱1,000,000 worth of protection.

For illustration, let’s say your insurance costs around ₱30,000 per year for 20 years.

That’s around ₱2,500 per month.

Over 20 years:

₱30,000 × 20 = ₱600,000

Now you might say:

“Instead na magbayad ako ng insurance, bakit hindi ko na lang ipunin hanggang magkaroon ako ng ₱1M?”

Pwede naman.

But let’s look at the numbers.

If you save the same ₱30,000 per year, ignoring investment returns for simplicity:

After 1 year → ₱30,000
After 5 years → ₱150,000
After 10 years → ₱300,000
After 20 years → ₱600,000

To reach ₱1,000,000 at ₱30,000 per year?

It would take you around 33 years.

Of course, pwede kang mag-invest.

Pwede mong taasan ang savings mo.

Pwede mong maabot ang ₱1M much earlier.

But that’s not really the point.

The real question is:

What happens WHILE you’re still building that ₱1M?

What if something happens in Year 2?

Year 5?

Year 10?

And this is one of the reasons why insurance exists.

Think about it.

Kung ₱100,000 pa lang ang naiipon mo, ₱100,000 pa lang ang sarili mong perang available to fall back on.

But what if the financial impact is much bigger than that?

Diyan pumapasok ang insurance.

You pay a smaller, manageable amount so that if a covered event happens, hindi lang sariling savings mo ang aasahan mo.

In financial terms, this is called “transferring the risk.”

Pero in simple terms:

Hindi mo inaako mag-isa yung financial risk.

And that’s an important distinction.

You’re paying because you may need protection BEFORE you have enough money to protect yourself.

That’s why savings and insurance shouldn’t be treated as if they’re competing with each other.

They have different jobs.

Savings = pera na binubuo mo.

Investments = pera na gusto mong palaguin.

Insurance = protection habang binubuo at pinapalago mo pa ang pera mo.

So instead of asking:

“Insurance or savings?”

Maybe the better question is:

“Habang binubuo ko pa yung ₱1M ko, sino ang sasalo ng financial impact kung may mangyari before I get there?”

Because earning more and building wealth is important.

But part of having a financial system is knowing what you’re building, what you’re protecting, and WHY.

Clarity first. Product second.

Not sure kung enough ba ang current protection mo—or kung kailangan mo na ba talaga ng insurance?

You don’t have to guess.

Message me “CLARITY” and let’s look at your current financial situation first—what you’re building, what needs protection, and where the possible gaps are.

No need to start with a product.

Let’s start with understanding your situation first.

3 Types of Health Protection You Can Get as an Adult đŸ„

I always say this:

Health protection is not a privilege. It’s a need.

But once you start earning regularly, health protection should be one of the things you start building.

So ano nga ba ang options mo?

1. PREPAID HEALTH CARD

💰 Pinaka-affordable, pero pinaka-limited

PROS:
‱ May options na around ₱1,000+ a year, pero depende sa provider and benefits
‱ Usually one-time use or fixed-period coverage
‱ Good starting point kung limited pa ang budget
‱ May cards designed for specific needs like emergency care, consultations, diagnostics, or hospitalization

CONS:
‱ Limited ang coverage at benefits
‱ May specific conditions, hospitals, procedures, or usage limits
‱ Some cards are single-use or may expire after a certain period
‱ Pre-existing conditions may have limited or no coverage, depending on the card

BEST FOR:
👉 People who want basic protection for unexpected emergencies
👉 Senior parents na mahirap o mahal nang kunan ng more comprehensive coverage, but still need an additional layer for certain emergency or medical expenses

Think of it as: “May basic protection ako kaysa wala.”

2. HMO

đŸ„ For everyday healthcare needs

Think: check-ups, consultations, diagnostics, laboratory tests, and hospitalization, depending on your plan.

PROS:
‱ Useful for healthcare needs you encounter more regularly
‱ Within covered services and limits, possible na maliit or wala ka nang ilabas na cash
‱ Usually has a network of doctors, clinics, and hospitals
‱ Encourages you to actually use healthcare, not just kapag malala na

CONS:
‱ May annual benefit limit
‱ Dependent on accredited doctors, clinics, and hospitals
‱ Pre-existing conditions may have limitations depending on the plan
‱ Many traditional HMO plans have age eligibility limits. Age 65 is a common cutoff for some plans, although senior-focused HMOs and plans with higher age limits also exist.

BEST FOR:
👉 Ayaw mabigla sa common medical bills
👉 Gusto ng easy access to doctors, labs, and check-ups
👉 Someone who wants to be proactive about maintaining their health
👉 Regular magpa-check-up or may healthcare needs throughout the year

Think of it as: “Gusto kong madaling makagamit ng healthcare kapag kailangan ko.”

3. HEALTH INSURANCE

đŸ›Ąïž For bigger, long-term financial risks

Ito naman ang protection designed for medical events that could have a much bigger financial impact, particularly critical illness, depending on the policy.

PROS:
‱ Coverage can reach millions, depending on the policy
‱ Can provide a lump-sum or cash benefit for covered critical illnesses
‱ Designed for longer-term protection
‱ Some policies can provide coverage to age 100, depending on the product
‱ Some policies may have cash value, dividends, savings components, or other living benefits kapag hindi nagamit for health

CONS:
‱ Long-term financial commitment
‱ Approval and pricing depend on factors such as age, health, and underwriting
‱ May have exclusions, waiting periods, and specific definitions of covered illnesses
‱ The longer you wait, changes in your health may affect your eligibility, premiums, or coverage

BEST FOR:
👉 Young and healthy individuals who want to secure protection early
👉 Income earners who want to protect their income and accumulated savings
👉 Breadwinners or people with dependents
👉 Someone who wants protection against the financial impact of a major or critical illness

One advantage of getting it while you're younger and healthier: generally, premiums can be more affordable and approval can be easier, subject to underwriting.

Think of it as: “Kapag may malaking health event, ayokong savings at income ko lang ang sasalo.”

So, ano ang best sa tatlo?

Hindi necessarily isa lang.

Because they solve different problems.

Prepaid Health Card → affordable, basic/specific protection
HMO → everyday healthcare access
Health Insurance → bigger, long-term financial protection

The goal isn't simply to say:

“May health protection naman ako.”

The goal is to understand:

Ano ang meron ako? Ano ang covered? Hanggang saan lang ang coverage? At saan pa ako may gap?

Because adulting isn't just about earning more.

It's making sure that as your income grows, your protection grows intentionally with it.

Marami nang nagtatanong sa akin:

“Anong insurance ang best para sa akin?”
“Saan magandang mag-invest?”
“Enough na ba ang savings ko?”
“Magkano ba talaga kailangan ko for retirement?”

But most of the time, I don’t think these are the real questions.

Because before we can answer WHAT you should get or WHERE you should put your money, we first need to understand:

What are you actually trying to build?
What are you trying to protect?
Nasaan ka ngayon financially?
Ano na ang meron ka?
Ano ang kulang?

At ano ang dapat mong unahin ngayon,
and what can wait?

Pwedeng malaki ang savings mo, pero without knowing what that money is for, mahirap sabihin kung “enough” na ba talaga.

That’s why one principle guides how I help people with their finances:

Clarity before products.

I don’t want you to make a financial decision simply because someone told you, “Maganda ’to.”

I want you to understand WHY it makes sense for you.

Before insurance, investments, retirement plans, or any financial product, let’s first make sense of your financial situation.

Where are you now?
Where do you want to go?
What needs attention?
And what is the next financial decision that actually makes sense for you?

Because the goal isn’t to have more financial products.

The goal is to make more intentional financial decisions.

If you’re not sure what you need yet, that’s okay.

You don’t need to know the product before we talk.

Start with clarity.

This is HOW money can give you choices; and sometimes, a less stressful life.

So eto na nga.

Dalawa yung kailangan tanggalin, so ₱16,000 na agad. Wala pa yung X-ray, gamot, and other possible expenses.

So in my head, sige, prepare tayo ng around ₱20,000.

Pero naisip ko

8 years na akong naghuhulog sa PhilHealth. Around ₱500/month ang kaltas sa akin before.

That’s almost ₱50,000 na rin.

And ever since, wala pa akong nagamit na benefit from PhilHealth. 😂

So sabi ko:

Even yung blood test na kailangan before extraction, covered din daw.

(Side note: Search niyo rin yung PhilHealth YAKAP and check kung eligible/registered kayo. Sayang din yung benefits.)

So ayun.

Akala ko ma-eentertain pa ako or at least ma-check man lang.

Okay.

Bumalik ako another day.

9 AM.

Maaga na 'yon for me. 😂

Kaso nakalimutan ko

Public hospital nga pala 'to.

30 slots lang daw per day for extraction.

6 AM ang start.

By 9 AM?

Ubos na.

At that point, ramdam ko na yung oras, pagod, pamasahe, at pabalik-balik.

Napaisip talaga ako:

Ilalaban ko ba yung ₱20,000?

Kasi kung private clinic, appointment lang.

Punta ako.

Comfortable.

Asikasuhin agad.

Tapos na.

Both teeth, done.

Pero
 ₱20,000.

Kailangan lang talaga tanggalin for my braces and teeth alignment.

So sabi ko, sige.

I’ll give the public hospital another try.

Kasi pwede akong mainip at sabihin:

“Ayoko na. Magbabayad na lang ako ng ₱20k.”

Pero ang daming tao doon na wala namang ganung option.

May matatanda.

Yung may serious illness?

And also

not because you can buy more things, but because you have more choices.

Choice na maghintay para makatipid.

Or magbayad para makatipid ng oras.

Choice na pumila.

Or mag-private kapag kailangan.

This is why savings and insurance matter in adulting.

they give you options.

And sometimes, having options is the difference between:

“Wala akong choice.”

and

“Ano ang best choice for me?”

Basta magsimula.

Because adulting taught me this:

Money can't solve everything. But having money can give you choices when life gets difficult.

At malaking bagay 'yon.

“Okay lang. May savings at investment naman ako.”

Ito yung isa sa pinaka-common na sagot kapag pinag-uusapan ang health emergencies.

And technically, tama naman.

Kapag na-hospitalize ka at may savings ka, may mahuhugot ka.

But here's the question I think we don't ask enough:

Anong savings ang gagalawin mo?

Emergency fund?

Travel fund?

House fund?

Investments?

Or yung perang ilang taon mong binubuo para sa retirement?

Because here's what I realized:

Having money available doesn't necessarily mean that money was meant for that problem.

Your savings have a job.

Some are there for liquidity and emergencies.

Some are for goals you're working toward.

Some are being invested for the future.

So if a major health event happens and all of those accounts suddenly become your medical fund

yes, you may be able to pay.

But another part of your financial plan may have to pay the price.

That's why financial preparation isn't just about asking:

“May pera ba ako?”

It's also asking:

“If something happens, which money takes the hit?”

This is where protection starts to make more sense.

And definitely not because insurance replaces savings.

But because not every financial risk needs to be carried entirely by the money you've spent years building.

Some risks, you retain.

Some risks, you prepare cash for.

And some bigger risks, you can choose to transfer.

Savings help you build your future.

Protection helps make sure one unexpected event doesn't have to rewrite it.
