Most of you will skip this post because it's about "life insurance". This is one of the Philippines' major problems. Only a few people understand the value of life insurance.
Whenever approached by an insurance agent, they immediately decline without giving any second thought about their decision.
Let me share with you a story for you to understand the importance of life insurance.
Maria Theresa was an engineer and so her husband Lito. One day, Maria Theresa was approached by an insurance agent and discussed with her the importance of life insurance. She got interested in buying insurance for herself and for her husband when she learned how important it is. She invited the agent to her home on weekend, so her husband could hear also what she had learned. When the agent arrived, she called her husband who was busy talking to someone on the phone. But when her husband learned that it was about insurance he immediately dismissed the agent by saying "Insurance? I don't have time for that!"
Maria Theresa felt embarrassed by her husband's behavior, and because of this she told the agent to just meet her again at her office. To cut the long story short, Maria Theresa bought life insurance for herself.
Two years later, Maria Theresa suffered a heart attack, was rushed to the emergency room but did not survive. When the agent learned about it, she talked to Theresa's secretary to prepare the necessary documents needed to process the claim.
The agent visited the wake of Maria Theresa bringing a mass card with her. The agent approached Lito and asked him if he still remembers her. Lito replied that he seems to. The agent said: "I am the agent who was invited by your wife one weekend in your house to discuss life insurance. But you told us that you did not have time for life insurance. But Maria Theresa loved you so much that she bought life insurance policy worth 20 million. Now Lito, may I ask you, do you have time for 20 million?
Most of us think that having life insurance is like preparing for your own death. Since most of us were not taught the value of financial planning in school, what more about the importance of life insurance? You don't buy life insurance because someone has to die, you buy life insurance because someone has to live. You owe it to your loved ones.
