Progressive teachers and educators: do not be deceived by the trivial rebranding of the Marcos Jr. government with “Bagong Pilipinas”!

One year in office, both as President and as head of the Department of Agriculture, and all that this non-performing pretender can bring to the table is a brand new logo and catchphrase that cunningly resembles his father’s brand of “Bagong Lipunan” that thoroughly failed in all its promises of ending (and in fact, pushed for more) poverty, hunger, corruption, and violence.

What we see in “Bagong Pilipinas” is a possible means for the Marcos Jr. government to further historical distortion. Over the 2022 national elections, they have successfully weaponized social media platforms to whitewash the dark years of the Marcos dictatorship. Through their well-oiled and well-funded propaganda machine, pro-Marcos social media influencers and content creators have served as instruments of disinformation that played on the public’s nostalgia for a so-called “golden age” that did not exist. “Bagong Pilipinas,” as the government’s official slogan, provides the legal means to use public funds in not only solidifying the Marcos Jr. “brand” of leadership, but also systematically remolding public perception towards his family’s complicity in massive human rights violations and kleptocracy during dictatorship years.

Despite Marcos Jr. and his ilk claiming success after one year in office, what they have actually done is to simply safeguard their political and economic interests. There is nothing new in a government dominated by political dynasties and oligarchs that takes advantage of the nation’s poverty and backwardness to strengthen their foothold by cuddling with foreign powers, creating laws that only benefit them, and enforce their feudal rule over the entire Filipino people.

The Congress of Teachers/Educators for Nationalism and Democracy urges the public not to be deceived by the “Bagong Pilipinas” slogan which serves as Marcos Jr.’s propaganda to conceal an ineffective first year in office. We demand from the government long-lasting solutions to very real problems of the Filipino people, and not band-aid solutions that only serve to facelift Marcos Jr.’s public image.

Nagbubulag-bulagan ang gobyerno sa lantad na katotohanang hindi nakabubuhay ang sahod ng mga g**o kung kaya kinakapos at bumabaling sa pangungutang. Ayon sa pag-aaral ni Dr. Rosario Manasan noong 2015, 57.9% sambahayan ng public school teacher ang may hindi nababayarang pagkakautang. Tumaas pa ang bilang na ito dahil ayon sa DepEd, tumaas ang kabuuang pagkaka-utang ng pampublikong g**o mula P301 bilyon tungong P319 bilyong mula 2016 hanggang 2018. Tiyak na lumobo pa ang pagkakautang ng mga g**o sa pananalasa ng TRAIN Law ni Duterte, mga dagdag-gastos ng distance learning at pagbalik sa face-to-face classes, at patuloy na pagtaas sa presyo ng mga pangunahing bilihin at serbisyo.

Taliwas sa nais palabasin ng pamahalaan na puro travel, bumibili ng sasakyan at maluho ang g**o kung kaya nalulubog sa utang, ang karaniwang dahilan ng pagkaka-utang ng mga g**o ay ang sumusunod:
1. Pambayad sa matrikula ng mga pinag-aaral sa kolehiyo;
2. Pagpapasyang bumili ng bahay upang makaahon na sa buwanang pangungupahan;
3. Pagpapa-ospital ng kapamilyang may malalang sakit o naaksidente;
4. Pagbili ng mga kailangang kagamitan sa pagtuturo na mataas ang presyo tulad ng laptop, projector, printer at iba pa.

Sa ganitong kalagayan, nangangambang matulad ang mga g**o sa sinapit ng mga nagretirong walang nakuhang pensiyon. Ayon mismo sa DepEd, taong 2016 ay tinatayang 26,000 na nagretirong g**o ang hindi nakatatanggap ng pensyon dahil sa pagkalubog sa utang. Imbis na magpahinga, napipilitan pa ring magtrabaho ang mga matanda na’t may sakit na retiradong g**o.

Kaya nararapat lamang na sa darating na SONA, pangunahing marinig ng mga g**o mula kay Pres. Marcos Jr. ang pagtataas ng sahod. Sama-sama nating palakasin ang ating mga panawagang:
- P50K entry-level pay for teachers, now!
- P33K for SG1!

LOOK | Teacher solon slams signing into law of Maharlika Investment Fund bill

House Deputy Minority leader and ACT Teachers Partylist Rep. France Castro strongly criticized the signing into law of the Maharlika Investment Fund bill by President Marcos Jr., stating that it is far from what the Filipino people truly need.

"The Maharlika law is farthest from what our people need. It will not lower the prices of goods, it will not increase the wages of workers, and it will not provide free land to farmers. Most likely, it will only deplete funds that should be better spent in uplifting the lives of the poor," said the teacher solon.

Rep. Castro further emphasized that the Maharlika Investment Fund bill is fundamentally flawed because it allows the Marcos administration to use public funds to operate it. Additionally, she expressed concern over the lack of transparency in the process leading to the passage of the law.

"The Maharlika fund law went through a very untransparent process. We will definitely question this at the Supreme Court," Rep. Castro asserted.

ACT Teachers Partylist stands firm in its commitment to protect the interests and welfare of the Filipino people, and will continue to pursue legal avenues to challenge laws that do not serve the best interests of the nation. # # #
