Stronger typhoons. Rising sea levels. Smaller fish catch.
These are no longer distant threats, they are happening right now in our communities in Surigao del Norte.

From the impact of Super Typhoon Odette to the daily struggles of fisherfolk facing unpredictable seas, climate change continues to affect our livelihoods, environment, and future.

Climate change is largely driven by human activities, but we can also be part of the solution.
โ€ข Deforestation
โ€ข Industrial and Mining Activities
โ€ข Unsustainable Agriculture
โ€ข Overexploitation of Natural Resources
โ€ข Transportation Emissions
โ€ข Improper Waste Management

These actions increase greenhouse gases and damage our ecosystems, but through collective effort, we can minimize their impact.

โœ… Diversify livelihoods
โœ… Protect mangroves and forests
โœ… Practice sustainable fishing
โœ… Shift to clean energy like solar
โœ… Reduce waste by reusing and recycling materials
โœ… Be prepared and stay informed

The question is no longer if climate change will affect usโ€”

A significant step forward in strengthening women centered enterprises was achieved through the successful conduct of the Women Centered Value Chain Analysis (WCVCA) Workshop under the Enhancing Livelihood and Climate Resilience Project (ELCReP) last March 20, 2026 at Jakelou Events Place, Brgy. Sabang, Surigao City.

The activity gathered 30 representatives from 16 Peopleโ€™s Organizations (POs) and 8 representatives from LGUs and partner agencies, all united in advancing inclusive, resilient, and sustainable livelihood opportunities, especially for women at the heart of community development.

With the guidance of Ms. Suzzette Gellangcanao, Livelihood and Enterprise Technical Coordinator of CARE Philippines, participants explored value chain opportunities, identified gaps, and strengthened strategies to ensure that women are not just participants, but leaders and decision-makers in local economies.

This initiative is implemented by Surigao Economic Development and Microfinance Foundation, Inc. (SEDMFI), funded by the TIJORI Foundation, and managed by CARE Philippines, continuing its mission to build resilient communities through inclusive and gender-responsive approaches.

In celebration of Womenโ€™s Month, we recognize the inspiring story of Medelina Pomoy Corminal, also known as Nay Meding, a 73-year-old Bantay Dagat and member of Rizal Marine Protector & Fisherfolks Association (RMPFA) who continues to protect the marine sanctuary and serve her community.

For 9 years, she has shown that dedication to conservation knows no age or gender. Through her commitment to safeguarding the sea, Nay Meding reminds us that women play a vital role in protecting our natural resources and guiding the next generation toward responsible stewardship of the environment.

Our oceans and farmlands provide food, livelihoods, and life for many communities. But unsustainable fishing and farming practices threaten these vital resources and the future of our environment.

The Enhancing Livelihood and Climate Resilience Project, implemented by SEDMFI, promotes:
โœ… Sustainable fishing and good aquaculture practices
โœ… Responsible and climate resilient agriculture

By supporting these practices, we help protect our ecosystems while strengthening community livelihoods.

Strengthening local support for community initiatives.

Earlier today, the Municipality of Del Carmen, led by Mayor Alfredo M. Coro, visited the TUFACO SGP-7 project site. The visit was attended by representatives from SEDMFI as the Landscape-Level NGO Hub, together with the President of TUFACO.

The discussion opened opportunities to identify the organization's needs and how the LGU can further extend its support. Mayor Coro also expressed optimism and strong support for initiatives like this that help empower communities and promote sustainable development.
