THE UNTOLD STORY: HOW I MOVED FROM SAVER TO INVESTOR?
by Salve Duplito

When I was a young mother, I worked for BusinessWorld as a business reporter. When you come from the province, there is a lot of pressure to wear better clothes, better shoes, have better accessories JUST TO BLEND IN. Not even to stand out. Multiply this 10x over when you are interviewing billionaires and talking to bankers at the highest rung of the corporate ladder.
The suits are nice to you because you will write about them, but sometimes, you have the feeling that they look down on reporters as a necessary evil who are not even part of the classy crowd. you know? Of course, there were some REALLY nice ones who respected who we really were, not just the pen that gave life to words that can either save or destroy a company's reputation. But life, just like the beat I worked in, was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you were gonna get.
It was not unheard of for some to get seduced by the lifestyle, to be carried away by the heady feeling that they are part of the crowd, to get lured into buying the big-ass rings and the flashy things. And sometimes it is not even to show off to the crowd itself but to each other.
I was fortunate to work with people who were grounded. Fellow reporters and editors who mentored me and never added to the pressure to live it up. And the Cabinet Secretaries, BSP governors and Monetary Board members themselves who saw us as individuals, not just writers.
But most of all, this was the greatest learning: the best way to join the ranks of the elites is not by spending, but by investing.
ULITIN KO HA:
THE BEST WAY TO JOIN THE RANKS OF THE ELITES IS NOT BY SPENDING, BUT BY INVESTING.
I didn't need the flashy cars, I only needed to know that those board of directors had to report to me as a shareholder, one of the minor ones, yes, but still a shareholder of listed companies. Of mutual fund companies. And that for every knowledge I gained, I could ask better questions that will serve the common good of all the investors in the country.
It is and will always be the most fun transformation I went through. Right now? I have learned to appreciate fine jewelry, I no longer cringe at spending money on expensive travel, and can relax in the presence of any one considered a celebrity. But I still prefer to eat tuyo and dilis, I can speak like a batang kalye, and enjoy simple thrills. It is not really money that defines us, but the knowledge that we can stand in our truth because the lack of it will never make us do what we do not want to do.
As for the exact steps I took to move from saving to investing? It's all here: step by step, and even with recommendations on what you can start buying! Watch time: 11:50 ONLY
