Black Soldier Fly (BSF) are different to the common house fly. They are black, longer and nicer looking. BSF have lost their mouth since their sixth stage larvae (black pupa) and thus don't eat. They spend their adult life (about 8 days) trying to breed and only the female will be looking for food, not to consume but to lay her eggs nearby (instead of on the food itself like common house flies).

Black Soldier Fly

The larvae and adults are considered neither pests nor vectors. Instead, black soldier fly larvae play a similar role to that of redworms as essential decomposers in breaking down organic substrates and returning nutrients to the soil.

Black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) are an excellent source of sustainable protein for aquaculture, animal feed, and pet and human nutrition.[citation needed] The larvae have voracious appetites and can be used for composting household food scraps and agricultural waste products.
