In the Philippines, the seemingly random letters on EV license plates actually follow a system.

Under LTO guidelines, Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) are assigned plate numbers where the second letter falls between A and M. Meanwhile, Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs) and Plug-in Hybrids (PHEVs) get second letters from N to Z. For both types, the third letter is restricted to V/W/X/Y/Z.

This is the second easiest way to tell (second only to the very green font color) that the vehicle the plate is attached to runs on some form of electric powertrain.

Why does this matter? Because as EV adoption grows, so do attempts to game the system. Some gasoline-only cars have been spotted with fake plates to dodge number coding exemption under the EVIDA Law. Knowing these conventions helps motorists, enforcers, and even fellow drivers spot inconsistencies.

The next time you get flagged by a traffic enforcer for coding because they can’t tell if your font color is green or black at night, ask them to verify using those middle letters.
