The flooding that struck the Rasuwagadhi border area and other parts of northern Nepal has brought immense loss, with families grieving, communities waiting for news, and homes and roads swept away.

ADB stands with Nepal, and we are ready to support the response and recovery in the weeks ahead.

🌡️ 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗮 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗥𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝘁

𝗛𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗹𝗶𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗸𝘀, and cities are on the front line. In 2024, 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗮 recorded its highest daily temperature of 𝟯𝟴.𝟰°𝗖, highlighting the growing risks that extreme heat poses to health, productivity, and vulnerable communities.

📍From 5-7 August, 𝗔𝗗𝗕'𝘀 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗜𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 brought together government agencies, development partners, researchers, and civil society in Jakarta to advance 𝘂𝗿𝗯𝗮𝗻 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲-𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴. These efforts will help cities identify heat hotspots, protect at-risk populations, and better prepare for future heat events.

💰 The workshop also tackled a critical 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗴𝗮𝗽. Despite rising climate-health risks, the health sector receives 𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝟬.𝟱% 𝗼𝗳 𝗺𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴. By bringing together stakeholders from health, climate, planning, and finance sectors, the workshop focused on translating national priorities into investment-ready solutions that protect cities and communities and help them cope with rising heat. 🤝🏙️

Water hyacinth now covers 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝟮𝟬% 𝗼𝗳 𝗟𝗮𝗴𝘂𝗻𝗮 𝗟𝗮𝗸𝗲, clogging waterways, worsening flooding, and contributing to methane emissions as the plants decompose.

ADB, with support from the 𝗨𝗿𝗯𝗮𝗻 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗱, is seeking international experts to explore how this invasive plant could be turned into 𝗯𝗶𝗼𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆, while helping improve waterways, reduce emissions, and create livelihood opportunities.
