Commemorating Gwangbokjeol, Korea’s National Liberation Day

On August 15, Korea celebrates Gwangbokjeol (광복절) — a day that holds a special place in the nation’s history.

More than a commemoration of Korea’s liberation in 1945, Gwangbokjeol is an occasion to remember the courage and dedication of those who paved the way for the freedom and opportunities enjoyed today.

As we mark the 81st National Liberation Day, the Korea Eximbank Manila Representative Office honors the legacy of those who dedicated themselves to Korea’s freedom and reflects on the values of freedom, resilience, and hope for the future.

Hi! This is Suyun Kim and Jihyun Park, interns at the Korea Eximbank Manila Representative Office.

We recently attended the Philippines Economic Update Development Dialogues: "Moving Up, Aiming Higher: Seizing the Upper-Middle-Income Opportunity," hosted by the World Bank. The event marked the launch of the Philippines Economic Update (PEU) Midyear 2026 Edition and brought together government officials and development experts to discuss what the Philippines' recent transition to upper-middle-income country (UMIC) status means for its future.

A key message throughout the discussions was that reaching UMIC status is a milestone, not a destination—it is the beginning of a more challenging stage of development. While the country's economic progress over the past decade has been remarkable, sustaining that momentum will require stronger productivity, higher-quality jobs, and continued structural reforms.

Attending this event offered valuable insights into the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead for the Philippines. It also reinforced how sustained investment, sound policies, and effective public-private collaboration will shape the country's next stage of development.

🚌 Seoul’s Bus Transport Reform

As Seoul grew more developed, it also began grappling with chronic traffic congestion, prompting the city to search for ways to make commuting faster and more reliable. Bus lanes along the curb were often blocked by private vehicles, parking, and deliveries, causing frequent delays and undermining bus performance.

On July 1, 2004, the Seoul Metropolitan Government launched its median-lane bus rapid transit (BRT) system across major arterial roads. The system features dedicated center-running exclusive bus corridors, integrated smart ticketing, and centralized stations. This increased average peak-hour bus speeds by about 30% (from around 15 km/h to 20 km/h)—making public transportation faster, more reliable, and more convenient for millions of commuters.

As of 2026, Seoul has 13 median bus lane (BRT) corridors with a combined length of approximately 128.9 km.

We recently attended the Capacity Development Seminar on Bridge Design: “Advancing Bridge Engineering for a Resilient Future,” hosted by Yooshin Engineering Corporation in partnership with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and the Economic Development Cooperation Fund (EDCF).

✨Main Highlights
• Design and construction of cable-stayed bridges
• Wind engineering and wind tunnel testing
• Seismic risk engineering for bridge structures
• Offshore geotechnical investigation and foundation engineering
• Lessons learned from the PGN Island Bridges

🔑Key Insights
One of the most interesting takeaways was learning how bridge design must be adapted to the specific environmental conditions of each location. Factors such as wind and foundation condition and seismic risks must be carefully considered throughout the design process.

In an archipelago like the Philippines, bridges play a crucial role in connecting communities. At the same time, the country faces significant risks from natural hazards such as earthquakes and typhoons. For this reason, developing safe and resilient bridge infrastructure requires not only advanced engineering expertise, but also careful consideration of local environmental and geological conditions.

📍Overall, the seminar demonstrated the importance of combining engineering expertise, site-specific investigation, and international cooperation to build safer and more climate-resilient transport infrastructure in the Philippines.

IN PHOTOS 📸: The KEXIM-EDCF Manila team visited the New Cebu International Container Port (NCICP) project site on June 17, 2026. The team met with representatives from the Department of Transportation (DOTr), project consultant and contractor and inspected the ongoing works across the access road and port facilities.

KEXIM-EDCF looks forward to continued momentum toward the timely completion of the NCICP, which is expected to boost trade efficiency and support the growth of commerce and industry in Cebu and the Visayas region.
