The British pound is one of the oldest currencies still in use today and was already circulating nearly 1,000 years before the U.S. dollar was officially established in 1792. While the U.S. dollar was inspired partly by European silver coins like the Spanish dollar, the British pound evolved from ancient English silver-based monetary systems dating back to the Anglo-Saxon era. The pound has survived monarchies, wars, empires, and economic revolutions — making it one of the most historically significant currencies in the world.
