I thought I would never make it to 4 years, let alone a year. Starting up a new company in the Philippines right after the pandemic was not just challenging, it was almost close to impossible for me who has not lived in the Philippines for 25 years. What do I know?
But here I am beaming with pride after 4 years since moving back to Manila and establishing a real estate company without a guarantee if it’s going to work out. Just armed with confidence in the Philippine market and that burning desire to atone my absence of 25 years.
Fast forward today, I have learned one distinct virtue that allowed me to get my head slightly above the water despite the challenges that the real estate industry experienced ( post pandemic, POGO exodus, oversupply of studio units in the Bay Area, ridiculously high real property taxes in Makati, low demand in commercial real estate, slow business registration processes, unfair penalties, etc). That virtue is that lightness of being. Whatever setbacks we encounter, Filipinos in general, especially my team at Mid Night Sun MNS Corporation seem to have this divine knowing that things will be alright. It’s not the nonchalance, it’s not the fatalistic attitude. It’s somewhere between faith in divine providence and complete surrender to uncertainty. This is definitely worth my pondering after having worked in various workplaces around the world.
To the people I work with at Midnight Sun MNS Corp., the tenants we serve, the clients we meet, the local community and new people who show up in need of a place to reside or a workplace, I can truly say that it’s really more fun working in the Philippines and that we continue to serve with a smile and a lightness of being.
