“𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐦𝐮𝐜𝐡 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐢𝐧 𝐢𝐬 𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡?” 𝐌𝐚𝐲𝐛𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭’𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧.⁣

A lot of small business owners price in one of two ways.⁣
⁣
“𝐌𝐚𝐠𝐤𝐚𝐧𝐨 𝐚𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐨𝐫?”⁣
⁣
Or:⁣
⁣
“𝐌𝐚𝐠𝐤𝐚𝐧𝐨 𝐚𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐤𝐨? 𝐀𝐝𝐝 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐮𝐩.”⁣
⁣
Those are useful references.⁣
⁣
But they are not the whole story.⁣
⁣
Because your price should also consider:⁣
⁣
𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐦𝐮𝐜𝐡 𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐞 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐠𝐞𝐭?⁣
⁣
Take a service business.⁣
⁣
If your service costs you ₱10,000 to deliver, cost-plus pricing might tell you to charge ₱13,000 or ₱15,000.⁣
⁣
But what if that service helps the client:⁣
⁣
save ₱100,000,⁣
⁣
avoid a major penalty,⁣
⁣
increase sales,⁣
⁣
or make a better business decision worth much more than your fee?⁣
⁣
The customer is not only buying your hours or your cost.⁣
⁣
They are buying the 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐮𝐥𝐭.⁣
⁣
Same with products.⁣
⁣
A machine may cost ₱800,000 to produce.⁣
⁣
Cost-plus may tell you to sell it at ₱1M.⁣
⁣
But if that machine helps the customer save ₱500,000 a year and increase production significantly, its value to the customer may be much higher than the cost of producing it.⁣
⁣
Even simple consumer products work this way.⁣
⁣
A cup of coffee can sell for ₱40, ₱100, ₱180, or more.⁣
⁣
The cost of the coffee itself is not the only thing being priced.⁣
⁣
People may also be paying for convenience, location, brand, consistency, service, or experience.⁣
⁣
So I like to think about pricing this way:⁣
⁣
𝐂𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐠𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐚 𝐟𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐫.⁣
⁣
𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐠𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐱𝐭.⁣
⁣
𝐕𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐞 𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐩𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐮𝐩𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞.⁣
⁣
This does not mean you can just charge any amount you want.⁣
⁣
The customer still needs to 𝐬𝐞𝐞, 𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐞.⁣
⁣
And competitors still matter because customers always have alternatives.⁣
⁣
But if you only price from your cost or your competitor’s price, you may be leaving value on the table.⁣
⁣

Very common situation sa panahon ngayon.⁣
⁣
And usually, the first instinct is to compare the obvious number:⁣
⁣
₱𝟑𝟔𝐊 𝐯𝐬 ₱𝟓𝟎𝐊.⁣
⁣
But if I were the one deciding, I wouldn’t stop there.⁣
⁣
I’d use the same process I use whenever I’m comparing two options involving money.⁣
⁣
𝟏. 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐥𝐨𝐰𝐬⁣
⁣
How much money actually comes in under each option?⁣
⁣
For a job, that means comparing 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞-𝐡𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐲, not just gross salary.⁣
⁣
For a business, compare the cash or income each option can generate.⁣
⁣
For an investment, compare the expected return.⁣
⁣
𝟐. 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐟𝐥𝐨𝐰𝐬⁣
⁣
What additional costs come with each option?⁣
⁣
For a job:⁣
transportation, food, parking, clothing, taxes, etc.⁣
⁣
For working abroad:⁣
housing, food, travel, remittances, taxes, cost of living.⁣
⁣
For a business:⁣
operating costs, people, inventory, equipment, marketing.⁣
⁣
For an investment:⁣
fees, taxes, transaction costs, maintenance, or other expenses.⁣
⁣
𝟑. 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐤𝐞𝐞𝐩⁣

At the simplest level:⁣

𝐈𝐧𝐟𝐥𝐨𝐰 − 𝐎𝐮𝐭𝐟𝐥𝐨𝐰 = 𝐍𝐞𝐭 𝐛𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐭⁣

A higher income does not automatically mean a better financial outcome if the additional costs also increase significantly.⁣
⁣
𝟒. 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐓𝐈𝐌𝐄⁣
⁣
Money is not the only limited resource.⁣
⁣
How much time does each option require?⁣
⁣
A higher-paying job may also mean more commuting.⁣
⁣
A business may earn more but demand significantly more of your time.⁣
⁣
An investment may offer better returns but require more active management.⁣
⁣
Time saved also has value.⁣
⁣
Not every free hour needs to be converted into pesos, but it should still be part of the decision.⁣
⁣
𝟓. 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐨 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞⁣

Career growth.⁣
⁣
Learning.⁣
⁣
Stress.⁣
⁣
Flexibility.⁣
⁣
Family time.⁣
⁣
Company culture.⁣
⁣
Boss and workmates.⁣
⁣
Risk.⁣
⁣
Future opportunities.⁣
⁣
Personal fulfillment.⁣
⁣
These may not appear in a spreadsheet, but they can completely change which option is better for you.⁣
⁣
And this approach is not only for job offers.⁣
⁣
You can use it when comparing:⁣

How long before you have to pay your suppliers?⁣

In finance terms:⁣

The shorter the cycle, generally the faster your money comes back.⁣

And this is why profit alone doesn’t tell the whole story.⁣

⁣
One gets its cash back quickly.⁣
⁣
The other waits months before the cash returns.⁣
⁣
Same profit.⁣
⁣
But the second business needs much more money just to keep operating.⁣
⁣
And when it grows, it may need even more funding.⁣
⁣
This is why, once your products or services are already priced profitably, 𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐡 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐞𝐱𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭.⁣

Profit answers:⁣

That tells us something about the environment businesses are operating in.⁣

But if you’re a business owner, the more useful question is not:⁣

It is:⁣
⁣
“𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐬 𝐦𝐲 𝐛𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐢𝐟 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐫?”⁣

Because uncertainty does not affect every business the same way.⁣
⁣
A business with:⁣

healthy margins,⁣
strong cash,⁣
zero/manageable debt,⁣
good collections,⁣
and clear visibility over its numbers⁣
⁣
may still be in a good position to move.⁣
⁣
Another business with:⁣
⁣
thin margins,⁣
slow collections,⁣
too much inventory,⁣
high fixed costs,⁣
and heavy debt⁣
⁣
may need to protect itself first.⁣

That is why periods of uncertainty make financial visibility even more important.⁣

One of the things my wife and I talked about clearly before getting married was how we would handle money.⁣
⁣
The other big conversations were about faith, children, s*x, and boundaries with family.⁣
⁣
But with money, we were very clear.⁣
⁣
Whatever income we earn belongs to the 𝐟𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐲.⁣
⁣
We don’t treat one salary as mine and the other as hers.⁣
⁣
We look at what comes in, then decide together where it should go based on our goals, priorities, and beliefs.⁣
⁣
For us, this is connected to how we understand marriage.⁣
⁣
The Bible says that in marriage, the two become one.⁣
⁣
Even during our wedding ceremony, the priest reminded us:⁣
⁣
“𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐧𝐨 𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐰𝐨, 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐨𝐧𝐞.”⁣
⁣
And we believe that applies not only emotionally or spiritually, but also financially.⁣
⁣
So we plan together.⁣
⁣
Major expenses are discussed.⁣
⁣
Trips are saved for ahead of time.⁣
⁣
Investments are agreed on.⁣
⁣
Insurance and protection are discussed.⁣
⁣
Our children’s future is part of the plan.⁣
⁣
And we both know where the money is going.⁣
⁣
It is not always convenient.⁣
⁣
Surprise gifts are harder when both of you can see the transactions. 😅⁣
⁣
But the benefits have been much bigger than the inconvenience.⁣
⁣
It creates 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲.⁣
⁣
It reduces financial secrets.⁣
⁣
It forces us to talk about priorities.⁣
⁣
And it gives both of us visibility over the financial life we are building together.⁣
⁣
For me, this is not about controlling your spouse.⁣
⁣
It is about saying:⁣
⁣
𝐖𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐟𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐲, 𝐬𝐨 𝐰𝐞 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐛𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐧.⁣
⁣
That does not mean every couple has to organize money exactly the way we do.⁣
⁣
Different couples may have different systems.⁣
⁣
But I do believe every marriage benefits from honest conversations about:⁣
⁣
Income.⁣
⁣
Debt.⁣
⁣
Spending.⁣
⁣
Savings.⁣
⁣
Investments.⁣
⁣
Giving.⁣
⁣
Financial goals.⁣
⁣
Because money can easily become a source of tension when expectations are hidden.⁣
⁣

𝐀 𝐛𝐮𝐝𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠. 𝐈𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭.

In larger businesses, budgeting is usually part of the system.

They plan where money should go before they spend it — payroll, inventory, marketing, equipment, debt payments, cash reserves, and growth.

But in many micro and small businesses, money decisions can be more reactive:

𝐌𝐚𝐲 𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐡? 𝐆𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐬.
𝐌𝐚𝐲 𝐨𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲? 𝐒𝐢𝐠𝐞.
𝐊𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐠? 𝐇𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐩 𝐮𝐥𝐢𝐭 𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐡.

Sometimes there is no clear budget, no allocation, and no agreed priority for where the next peso should go.

And that is exactly why the same budgeting discipline used by bigger businesses can also help small businesses — and even our personal finances.

Because whether you are managing ₱𝟏𝟎,𝟎𝟎𝟎 𝐚𝐭 𝐡𝐨𝐦𝐞 or ₱𝟏𝐌 𝐢𝐧 𝐚 𝐛𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬, the question is the same:

𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐲 𝐠𝐨 𝐧𝐞𝐱𝐭?

Personally, that ₱10,000 could go to:

Debt?
Emergency fund?
Insurance?
Investment?
A family experience?

There is no automatic answer.

It depends on what matters most in your current season and what you are trying to accomplish.

Businesses face the same question.

If the business has an extra ₱𝟏𝐌, should it go to:

More inventory?
New equipment?
Marketing?
Hiring?
Paying debt?
Keeping more cash?
Expanding to another branch?

Again, there is no automatic answer.

Every peso you put in one place is a peso you cannot put somewhere else.

That is why good financial management is not simply about 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬.

It is about deciding:

𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐲 𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐞 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐧𝐨𝐰?

For a household, that value might be security, becoming debt-free, or reaching a financial goal.

For a business, it might be increasing capacity, improving profitability, solving a constraint, or protecting cash.

𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐲 𝐢𝐬 𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐝.

The goal is not simply to avoid spending it.

We naturally celebrate when sales go up.⁣

₱1M became ₱1.5M.⁣
₱10M became ₱15M.⁣

Growth looks good.⁣

But sales is only one number.⁣
⁣
What if, while sales are growing:⁣

Margins are getting smaller?⁣
⁣
Customers are taking longer to pay?⁣
⁣
More cash is getting tied up in inventory?⁣
⁣
Fixed costs are increasing faster than profit?⁣
⁣
Debt is growing just to support operations?⁣
⁣
You can have a bigger business on paper — but a more financially stressed business underneath.⁣

That’s why I don’t think the question should only be:⁣

It should also be:⁣

But better margins, stronger cash flow, efficient use of capital, and sustainable growth matter too.⁣

When life is calm, discipline feels easy.

But when you’re tired, pressured, busy, or overwhelmed, you usually default to what is already built into your routine.

𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐞 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 — 𝐬𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐲 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐢𝐬𝐧’𝐭.
