I got my first life insurance plan at 24 years old.
At that time, I was still figuring out my career and financial goals. But I knew I wanted to start protecting the future I was building.
Here are the things I considered before getting my first plan:
1. Why do I need insurance?
I first asked myself what I wanted my insurance to accomplish.
Was it for income protection? Health protection? Family protection? Future financial goals? Knowing my purpose helped me determine what kind of coverage I actually needed.
2. How much can I comfortably afford?
I didn't want to get a plan just because I could afford the premium today.
I considered whether I could continue paying for it even if my income or priorities changed. A good insurance plan is the one I can sustain.
3. What benefits am I actually getting?
I didn't just look at the premium. I wanted to understand the coverage, benefits, exclusions, payment period, and other important details of the policy.
4. Who will be affected if something happens to me?
Even though I was still single, I realized that being single doesn't mean nobody depends on me financially.
I thought about my parents, my future family, and the financial responsibilities I might eventually have.
5. Who am I getting advice from?
I wanted an advisor who could explain the life insurance world to me, not just someone who would simply convince me to buy a policy.
I wanted to understand what I was getting into before making a long-term commitment.
Looking back, getting my first life insurance plan wasn't because I was expecting something bad to happen.
It was because I understood that having life insurance plans should be part of my overall financial portfolio. 💛
