𝑻𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒊𝒔 𝒂 𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒍 𝒔𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒚.
Meet Hector, a widower in his late 50s and a seasoned university professor who has devoted over 30 years to teaching and inspiring students.
Despite the many degrees, research publications, and years of experience attached to his name, Hector sits on a plane bound for Saudi Arabia, grappling with a harsh truth: at his age, he is no longer considered "hirable."
In his mind, he is haunted by the thought, "What now?"
As the plane soars through the clouds, Hector talks with Jun, a fellow OFW.
Sensing Hector's unease, Jun asks, "Why do you look so worried, kabayan?" Hector opens up about his fears—he has always thought that his teaching career would secure his future, but now, at 58, he finds himself lost and unsure.
He admits, "I should have planned better. Akala ko kasi, being a professor was enough. But now, with my wife gone and retirement looming, I realize I didn't prepare for this stage of life."
Jun listens carefully and shares his own story.
He explains how, a few years ago, he started educating himself about financial literacy.
He began investing in the stock market, real estate, and even a small online business.
"Na-realize ko kasi nun na relying lang sa salary ko as an employee e, hindi enough," Jun says.
You need other sources of income, talaga, especially when you’re older and companies no longer consider you a prime candidate for hiring."
Hector nods, feeling a mix of regret and realization.
He wishes he had diversified his income sources when he was younger. "But I didn’t know any better," he confesses.
"Tas ngayon, starting a business without my wife by my side seems impossible."
Jun smiles reassuringly, "It’s never too late to learn, Kabayan. You can still start now.
Financial literacy isn’t just for the young; it’s for anyone who wants to secure their future.
The key is to educate yourself and TAKE ACTION.
Don’t wait for life to push you into a corner. Plan ahead, and make sure you’re prepared."
Hector reflects on Jun's advice.
The pain of being an experienced professional yet feeling unwanted in the job market is a stark reminder of how important financial preparation is.
He realizes he cannot change the past, but he can start preparing for a better future.
He decided that after completing his exit clearance in Saudi Arabia, he would explore ways to educate himself financially and build other sources of income.
This conversation between Hector and Jun serves as a powerful reminder: DON'T LET YOURSELF BE CAUGHT OFF GUARD.
Financial literacy and planning for multiple income streams are essential, especially as you age and become less "desirable" in the job market.
