When the US dollar surges against the Philippine peso, the excitement among Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) and seafarers usually comes down to immediate visual math, even though macroeconomic forces eventually erode those gains.

1. Immediate Nominal Purchasing Power vs. Long-Term Inflation
The Immediate Perception:

If a seafarer sends home $1,000, they see their remittance jump from ₱50,000 to ₱62,000. In the short term, that extra ₱12,000 instantly covers fixed local costs—like debt payments, tuition fees, insurance premiums, or utility bills—that haven't adjusted upward overnight.

The Macro Reality: A weakening peso signals lower purchasing power nationally. Because the Philippines relies heavily on imported essentials—especially crude oil, wheat, fertilizers, and technology—a high exchange rate drives up domestic inflation. Within a few months, higher transport costs, elevated food prices, and increased cost of goods swallow up the nominal "extra" pesos.

2. Disconnect Between Earning and Spending
Most seafarers and OFWs live in a dual-currency environment:
Earnings are denominated in USD or currencies pegged to major foreign markets.

Expenses for their families back home are denominated in PHP.
Because the worker experiences foreign markets while their family buys in local markets, the psychological high of a higher exchange rate feels like a raise. However, unless those dollars are converted into productive assets (like business equity, real estate, or inflation-hedged investments), the gains are purely temporary.

Being a parent means preparing your kids for their future, not relying on them for yours. The best gift we can give our children isn’t just love—it’s our own financial independence. Break the cycle, secure your future, and let them build theirs freely .
