The Bureau of Customs (BOC) Port of Cebu welcomed key officials from the Regional Maritime Unit 7 (RMU-7), led by Chief PCOL Mario Cristino A. Lucero and Operations PCO PMAJ Arnel C. Anino, during a courtesy visit last January 23, 2025. The visit marked a renewed commitment between the two agencies to tackle smuggling and other transnational crimes within the region.
The meeting revolved around intensifying collaborative efforts to protect Philippine waters and ensure seamless trade facilitation. Key discussions included the implementation of joint anti-smuggling operations, issuance of Warrants of Seizure and Detention (WSD) for Maritime Unit-led enforcement actions, and the proposed deputation of RMU-7 personnel to provide additional enforcement support to the Port of Cebu. These initiatives aim to streamline operations, ensure stronger enforcement, and deter smuggling networks operating within the area of responsibility.
District Collector Atty. Felipe Geoffrey K. De Vera emphasized the importance of unified efforts in combating illicit trade, saying, βThe fight against smuggling requires not just the strength of BOC but the collective efforts of all government agencies. Through this partnership with the Regional Maritime Unit 7, we are bolstering our capabilities to safeguard the regionβs borders, protect our economy, and promote legitimate trade.β
Under the leadership of District Collector Atty. Felipe Geoffrey K. De Vera IV and with guidance from Commissioner Bienvenido Y. Rubio, the Port of Cebu remains steadfast in its commitment in fostering inter-agency collaboration to combat smuggling, aligned with ensuring the accomplishments of the other mandates. Through strategic partnerships like this with RMU-7, the Port continues to uphold the governmentβs thrust against illegal trade.
