If you're planning to get an insurance plan for your kid? Get an endowment or whole life.

An endowment gives you an amount equivalent to 10% of the plan's face amount every othe year and the lump sum plus dividends will be received by the kid when he reaches the age of 65.

A whole life covers the kid until age 100 and the paying period is guaranteed.

Lastly, if you're planning to set up an investment fund for your kid, get a universal investment trust fund (UITF) and reinvest the guaranteed monthly payout.

Insurance and investment should be two separate plans.

"Di na cguro ko ma approve Zit oy. I had thyroid CA years ago man," she remarked. "Try lang nato. Give me all lab test results including recent ones and let's see how things will unfold. Anyway if it wud be declined the initial payment will be refunded," I countered.

Her application was approved. She could not believe her luck.

Being the HR Director of a big hotel chain, she was mostly traveling from one hotel property to another. To make sure that her premium payments were made on time was challenging to say the least. Among all the clients i had then, hers was closely monitored to prevent lapsation.

So many years later, her cancer came back. Coming from a European trip with her 2 kids, and growing up with siblings who also succumbed to CA, I knew that a bigger battle was in the offing.

In one of our many exchanges about life and the battle she will soon be facing again, this time a bigger one, she told me, "Am glad you thought of me when you joined the insurance industry. I wish i got a bigger coverage, Zit." I just gave her my usual sweet smile and said "you want to get your coverage ahead? You need funds?" She gave me a quizzical look and said, "I can? I don't need it for myself bec the company will cover for my treatment but if i cud get my coverage now, i will use it so my son can study in Australia."

And so she got her coverage ahead. And her son left for Australia and lives there now with his sister.

She may have lost to the big C. But she won the hearts of her two kids because until the end, it was all about them.

She had since grown her hair back.

"The chemotherapy sessions were brutal," she said. It would have been more so if she had no funds to cover for the sessions. "Pero pasalamat ko sa akong employer nga gikuhaan ang mga employees ug insurance coverage unya gi apilan ug hospital income and critical illness riders. Pasalamat pod ko nimo, Zit for not giving up on my claim."

Her claim was initially disapproved. I told the GM of her company that i will seek reconsideration submitting test results that client failed to submit.

After 2 days, Manulife emailed back saying the claim for critical illness was granted and that the funds will be in the bank acct of the employer within 3 days.

The funds may have been insufficient to cover for all sessions but it allowed client to start treatment right away.

I saw her last in her daughter's debut. Laughing, dancing. She was in the company of her husband and 2 kids. She shud be. Life is about moments shared with people we love.

She is back at work. Oh well, she worked between chemo sessions when her stamina allowed. Work for her is cathartic.

I remember.

A call woke me up one early morning years ago. It was my client. My heart started to pound. When you are a life planner, early morning calls are made only in extreme emergencies.

She sounded calm and composed but her question jolted me. "Good morning, Mam. Sorry to call you this early. Enforced pa man ang policy ni Flenn no?" As soon as the last word was said, i knew something was wrong.

"Yes mam. It is. But will check to be sure. Are you ok?" Then her voice started to crack. Her husband met an accident early dawn: his car slammed into a trailer truck. He expired in the hospital.

They were in their late 20s and had their first born only months prior. They started to build a life together, started to dream for themselves and for their young family. But on that one fateful day, their dreams shattered.

Flenn may not have left his burgeoning family a huge coverage but his wife said it allowed her time to be with their baby. She used half of the proceeds and invested the other half. The insurance coverage doubled in amount because it was caused by accident.

The baby is now 20 yrs old and has started to spread her wings. The insurance money of her dad partly allowed her to soar.
