A Glimpse of the Filipino Family
Hello everyone. A post-pandemic survey (Inquirer-7-2-2025) on the portrait of the Filipino family showed a rebound in weddings in 2020, with a record-high 25.9 percent increase compared to the previous year. The figure was exhilarating, but the trend failed to sustain itself, as the following years showed a steady decline in weddings, as recorded by the PSA. More than that, it was discovered that cohabitation among women aged 15-49 with a live-in partner increased, and their numbers have quadrupled in the last three decades. More alarming is the discovery of 2.4 million Filipinos aged 15-24, living with partners outside of marriage. In rural areas, young women look forward to marriage but end up in cohabitation. With many couples living in a cohabitation status, more children are being born out of wedlock. What is presented above is just an iceberg in a wide array of reasons for the kind of family we have. As Christians, we cannot remain indifferent. This page is committed to setting the appropriate tone for marriage, both for those aspiring to marriage and for those who are already married, to enrich their journey toward a happy, productive family life. Could you share your insights and be an apostle for family and life?

SITUATION OF THE FAMILY IN THE WORLD

In recent years, the traditional craving for a happy marriage and family has been dramatically challenged by all kinds of noise questioning the culturally inherent character of marriage and family for modifying practices for personal convenience. Despite the polemics, the Catholic Church and several Christian denominations firmly stand for the family and life. For the Catholic Church, expressed in Amoris Laetitia, “the desire to marry and form a family remains vibrant, especially among young people, and this is an inspiration to the Church”. The United Church of God, an International Association, claimed that despite the odds, couples still get married, raise children, and hope to spend a lifetime together in happiness. It is ironic, according to advocates of family and life, that even experimenters with alternative forms of union want the terminology and benefits of traditional marriage and family, but they don’t want to follow the processes required in preparing for a happy marriage and family. Marriage and the family, no doubt, are institutions under attack. For those of us who recognize the benefits of a successful marriage and family life, it is paramount to assist young people who wish to embrace marriage as a vocation, and for those who are already married, to provide the opportunity to refresh and strengthen the promises they made to each other on their wedding day. Join me as I continue to explore and share with you the intricacies of a happy and successful marriage and family life.

THE FAMILY: AN ENDURING INSTITUTION
The family is an enduring institution that dates to ancient times. It cuts across generations and cultures. From simple societies to the present highly complex social life, the family remains the foundation of society. Hence, the family will endure amidst the present challenges confronting the family because it is the human institution that gives testimony to the participation of humans in the procreative process, naturally ordained by the creator. “Honor your father and mother,” the fifth commandment is a testament to the family’s enduring character, for there can be no children to honor parents without family. In Amoris Laetitia, the late Pope Francis wrote: “the desire to marry and form a family remains vibrant, especially among young people, and this inspires the Church”. The above quote is both a challenge and a responsibility for us, baptized in Christ, to accompany young individuals in discerning and preparing for the vocation of marriage. Likewise, for those already married, we need to support them in their journey towards more profound unity, holiness, and grace, anchored in the way of Christ. Please join me in my advocacy for the Family and Life by liking, writing comments, and sharing my posts on my page.

How comfortable are you with the noise now taking place in our society these days? Of course, strategies are being undertaken to provide solutions, but don't you think the issues flaunted are rooted in the character of family formation? Think about it, and let's share our insights.

CALL TO ACTION
Over the past decade, the Filipino family has felt the impact of several influences, resulting in changes in union formation, fertility patterns, and dissolutions. However, several studies claim that traditional family practices and values will remain constant for elders to pass on to the next generation. Intergenerational issues may occur, but a responsive culture will nurture the next generations with the fundamental values of love and close family ties. The family, an essential support to the young and the elderly, will remain a pillar in family relationships. Adjustments and modifications to traditional practices are bound to occur, hence, it is necessary to provide young individuals with direction and awareness on the significance of marriage and the family so that when they do come to decide to settle for the vocation of marriage, they will embrace it with maturity, commitment, dedication, and surrender to one another as partners in loving communion. Likewise, those already in the state of marriage must continuously refresh their “I dos” to maintain a stable, peaceful, caring, and harmonious family life. As Christians, we have a mission to serve our neighbors. Would you count yourself as one?

Quo Vadis Family and Life?
Hi, friends. My laptop broke down, and I missed you for almost three weeks. Anyway, I am back and would like to continue where I left off. Forty-four years ago, Pope St. John Paul II issued Familiaris Consortio to proclaim anew and exhort the faithful on the sacredness of marriage and the family, since it is divinely ordained for the procreation and education of children, which must find fulfillment in Christ. The encyclical invites us to examine the formation of families that are Christ-centered and rooted in the Sacrament of Marriage, whose relationships radiate love, peace, and fidelity in their homes and communities, serving as living witnesses of God's covenant. While the exhortation is addressed globally, first, let us look into the Philippine situation. Cristina Eloisa Baclig - Content Researcher/ Writer, (2025) in her study, revealed challenging issues confronting the future of Family and Life. Among them: the rise in cohabitation, fewer churches and more judges’ weddings, babies outside marriage now a majority, rise in early adolescent pregnancies, and many more. These findings suggest a growing prevalence of non-traditional family arrangements that challenge the traditional understanding of family formation. Don’t you think the above calls for responsive action?

Families at the crossroads
As I intimated to you in my latest post, this page is about Family and Life Advocacy for those who are preparing for the vocation of marriage and for supporting married couples in their ongoing journey toward an enriching family life. The family, more than any other institution in this age of Generation Z, is confronted with challenges that tend to weaken, if not destroy, the sanctity and dignity of marriage and the family. Marriage separation is common knowledge among communities, and divorce is once again resurfacing among our lawmakers. Known also to many of us are the rough sailings of families due to violations of rights that family members are entitled to. Admittedly, there are families who are living in fidelity to their calling and promoting those gospel values that form the foundation of an ideal family life. But there are debilitating factors in society that tend to undermine, if not eliminate, the gospel message of faithfulness to the covenant God has established for those in the married state. There is, therefore, a need to open opportunities for our young individuals and married couples to discover the ultimate meaning and truth of conjugal life, and that is what this advocacy is for.

Hi, everyone. Today is a special day for me because I am finally launching my dream of advocacy for the Family and Life. My doctor, in my recent visit with her, cleared several concerns I had with my health following my hospitalization more than six months ago. This advocacy shall include accompanying young individuals in discerning and preparing for the vocation of marriage through Christian formation grounded in Catholic teachings, and supporting married couples in their ongoing journey toward deeper unity, holiness, and grace through enrichment anchored on the Holy Scripture, Catechism, and the life of the Church. Reflections and discussions on Church documents, such as Familiaris Consortio and Amoris Laetitia, as well as other relevant issuances, will also be provided to foster a culture of prayer, sacramental life, and virtue within the family. Considering the plight of several families these days, let us journey together in BUILDING HEARTS AND STRENGTHENING HOMES. With the Holy Spirit as our guide and Mama Mary our intercessor, we can start inching our way toward building Holy Families for a Holy Church.

Yes, amidst all the noise and happenings occurring around us today and in the world, I still want to greet all of you MERRY CHRISTMAS and a BLESSED NEW YEAR. My reason is simple. Despite these happenings around us and in the world, God is still in control, and for good reasons only known to him. Furthermore, the message of Christmas is about love and God's never-ending concerns for humankind. The Holy Days provide us hope and reconciliation. Hope that during the New Year opportunities for development may open for us and that righteousness, love, justice, and peace may reign over us. God is good and wishes us to be humble, submissive to his will, and sensitive to his signs for reconciliatory mechanisms through Jesus Christ. God is always ready for our bidding. Anytime we come to him in prayer, he is always a good listener and a generous giver. Let us approach him in faith and be patient with his loving response. So, I repeat MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A BLESSED NEW YEAR. God bless everyone.
