Most of us, when choosing a leader, we look at the usual things. We ask, magaling ba siya? May experience ba? Maganda ba ang background niya? May connections ba? And if a person has all of these, we feel confident that he can lead.
Pero may napansin ako. Bakit may mga leader na kumpleto na lahat, magaling, experienced, well-connected, pero hindi pa rin sinusunod? People listen to them, but they do not really follow them.
Let me share something I learned.
In the Bible, there is a man named Moses. If you look at his life, kumpleto siya. He was educated in Egypt, powerful in words and deeds, and raised in the palace. If there was someone who looked ready to lead, it was Moses at 40.
But when he tried to step in and lead, he was rejected.
Alam mo kung kailan siya ginamit ng Diyos? When he was already 80 years old, after 40 years in the wilderness.
So I asked myself, what changed? Ano ang kulang kay Moses at 40 na meron siya at 80?
I believe the answer is this: humility.
I am learning that leadership is not built on skills alone. You can have the knowledge, the experience, even the position, but if your character is not ready, people may listen to you, but they will not follow you.
Leadership credibility is built on character, not credentials.
And this is something we must understand. Humility does not mean weakness. A leader must be compassionate, but at the same time firm. Kung puro compassion lang, people may not respect you. Kung puro firmness lang, people may not follow you. But when both are present, people will trust you.
So maybe the question is not, โAm I ready to lead?โ
Maybe the better question is, โIs my character ready?โ
If this is something you would like to learn more about, we will be discussing this in our Leadership Development Program tomorrow.
Sana makatulong.
