A cruise ship called the MV Hondius departed from Argentina in April 2026 — and by May, 3 people were dead, 8 were infected, and the WHO had declared an international alert. The culprit? Hantavirus. A disease spread primarily through contact with rodent urine, droppings, and saliva. Among those on board were Filipino crew members.
This isn't some distant, foreign problem. Pati tayo dito, dapat rin mag-ingat.
🏠 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗛𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗜𝘀 𝗔𝘁 𝗥𝗶𝘀𝗸
Hantavirus spreads when you inhale microscopic particles from infected rodent waste. You don't have to touch the rat. You don't even have to see it. Just breathing in contaminated dust — from an old box, a dusty corner, a forgotten storage room — is enough.
Imagine your child playing near old balikbayan boxes in the bodega. Or your helper sweeping a rat-infested bodega without protection. The virus can survive in dust for days. That's the real danger.
According to the CDC (US), the case fatality rate for severe Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS) cases can reach approximately 38%. There is no specific cure. Early supportive care is the only option.
⚠️ 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗛𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗼𝘄𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗠𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗗𝗼 𝗡𝗼𝘄
Here's what you can do to protect your home and family:
① 𝘕𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘴𝘸𝘦𝘦𝘱 𝘳𝘰𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘥𝘳𝘰𝘱𝘱𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴. Sweeping kicks the virus into the air. Instead, spray the area with a bleach-and-water solution (1 part bleach to 10 parts water), let it soak for 5 minutes, then wipe with a damp cloth.
② 𝘚𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘤𝘩 𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘣𝘰𝘢𝘳𝘥 𝘣𝘰𝘹𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘤 𝘣𝘪𝘯𝘴. Rats and mice can easily chew through cardboard. Sealed plastic bins are far harder for rodents to pe*****te — keeping stored items safe from contamination.
③ 𝘚𝘦𝘢𝘭 𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘺 𝘱𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘩𝘰𝘮𝘦. Rodents can squeeze through gaps as small as a coin. Check walls, pipes, and under doors. Use steel wool or cement to seal holes — rats and mice can't chew through metal and concrete.
④ 𝘗𝘳𝘰𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘭𝘺 𝘷𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘢𝘨𝘦 𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘴 𝘣𝘦𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨. Before cleaning a long-closed bodega or storage room, open windows and doors for at least 30 minutes first. Let fresh air dilute any contaminated dust particles.
⑤ 𝘞𝘦𝘢𝘳 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘵𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘤𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘳𝘰𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘵-𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘴. Use rubber gloves and an N95 mask — not just a simple face mask — when cleaning areas where rats may have been present.
