Retirement
"Plan ahead while you have the strength and capability to do it, when you are near this stage it might be too late for you."
Fact check.
โ The maximum pension given by SSS is at P 10k/month and the average is at around P 3k-5k
โ Only 1% of the retirees population lives in luxury, 9% lives comfortably, 15% lives just enough to survive and 75% lives poorly
โ Most employee would tell that their SSS benefit would be enough for retirement, or their children would provide for them
โ A huge number of people is not aware of inflation, where the purchasing power of our money will not be able to buy the same goods that we buy now. Let's take for example our staple food, rice. Way back 2000's a kilo of rice is more or less ranging from P 27-35/kg, now it costs at around P 50-75/kg
Let's create an example.
Today is your retirement (age 60) and will live for 20 more years. You are eating 3 times a day at P 100/meal. Now, let's do the Math.
P 100/meal x 3 meals/day = P 300/meal a day
365 days in a year x P 300/meal a day = P 109,500 cost of meal for a year
20 years to live x P 109,500 cost of meal a year = P 2,190,000
Inflation has not been included, this is just a basic assumption, and is based on the numbers. This is just for a meal, we did not discussed here other basic neeeds of a retiree, like medicine, utilities and toiletries. What if you are a person who wants to travel? A person who wants to enjoy retirement?
The questions are:
โ Have you prepared for it?
โ Who would support you during your retirement years?
โ Have you alloted a portion of your income for it?
โ Now that you know the data, what are the actions that you would take?
It is never too late. The ant does not look for food during the rainy days, they do it while the sun is strong.
