123 years ago, the first Philippine President, Emilio Aguinaldo, proclaimed the independence of the Philippines from its Spanish colonizer. As we commemorate this important time in the country’s history, let us reflect on what this means to us today, over one hundred twenty years later.

Amid the war we are fighting today with an unseen enemy (physical and mental), the words of National Hero Jose Rizal still resonates, reminding us the power of our mind and heart to win. At home, as we struggle to work despite numerous distractions, or outside bravely going about our daily work to serve customers despite fear of exposure, we can only rely on the force of our will to overcome our difficulties. And with the challenges that we face every day, it is only with our passion to fulfill our purpose of helping others so they can live better lives that we can uplift our spirit and continue, despite numerous rejections.

These are unprecedented times. Just like in 1898, the future seems uncertain. But we must fight the helplessness and sense of uncontrol. With the power of our mind and the strength of our heart, we can win this battle and achieve freedom from the inner and external battles we face every day.

A meaningful Independence Day to everyone..

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) joins the whole nation in celebrating its 123rd Independence Day on June 12, 2021 by featuring some of its numismatic and art collection that relate to the Philippine Independence.

In the photo is the 100,000-piso Philippine Centennial Commemorative Banknote. Only 1,000 pieces of these were printed. With dimensions similar to a legal-size bond paper or 8.5 x 14 inches, it is, so far, the biggest legal tender note issued by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, both in terms of face value and size.

The obverse side of the note features the “Sigaw ng Himagsikan,” a scene that brings to mind the struggle for Independence and the cry of defiance against Spanish colonial rule by Andres Bonifacio and the Katipuneros on 24 August 1896.

The reverse side shows the glorious and triumphant scene of the Proclamation of the Philippine Independence by Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo on 12 June 1898 in Kawit, Cavite. It was on this occasion that the Philippine flag, made by Marcela Agoncillo, was unfurled while the national anthem, composed by Julian Felipe, was played.

The 100,000-piso Philippine Centennial Commemorative Banknote and other important pieces in the BSP’s numismatic collection are featured in the recently launched Yaman: History and Heritage in Philippine Money. For more information, please visit www.bsp.gov.ph or email [email protected].

Report on the Philippine Financial System Highlights Sound and Stable Banking Industry

The positive performance of the system was evinced by sustained growth in assets, loans, deposits and capital that was evident across banking groups. The universal and commercial banks (UKBs) channeled resources mostly to loans and investments in line with the country’s improving macroeconomic environment, business climate and consumer sentiment. Meanwhile, thrift banks (TBs), and rural and cooperative banks (RCBs) allocated most of resources for lending to agriculture and consumer-related markets.
