“Real estate has occupied a privileged position in the hierarchy of asset classes, frequently characterized as a “safe haven,” a “store of value,” and, at times, even a “crisis or recession-proof” investment.

This narrative has been reinforced by investors, developers, and financial advisors alike. Yet, in an environment defined by increasing prices, elevated interest rates, constrained liquidity, and heightened risk aversion, such characterizations warrant closer scrutiny.”

Real estate has occupied a privileged position in the hierarchy of asset classes, frequently characterized as a “safe haven,” a “store of value,” and, at times, even a “crisis or

The Philippines Already Has a Diaspora Bigger Than Some Rich Countries

There is one number in the Philippine story that deserves far more attention than it gets:

10.7 million Filipinos live abroad.

That is not a small statistic. That is an economic force.

To put that into perspective:

That is larger than the entire population of Singapore.
Larger than Israel.
Larger than Switzerland.
Larger than Luxembourg many times over.

In other words, if overseas Filipinos were counted as a country, they would already rank alongside developed nations in terms of population size.

And that number is likely understated.

Because over time, many Filipinos abroad acquire citizenship in countries like the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia. They stop being counted as “Filipinos abroad” in official data — but economically and culturally, they remain deeply connected.

So the real number is probably higher.

This is where the conversation needs to become more intellectually honest.

People do not leave their home country at this scale by accident.

They leave because the incentives are clear.

Higher wages.
Stronger institutions.
More predictable systems.
Better healthcare.
Better education.
Better long-term security.

For many Filipinos, migration is not just about income.

It is about quality of life.

And once people experience that level of stability abroad, something shifts.

If you ask Filipinos overseas — especially those without their families — a significant number are not planning to return permanently.

They are planning to bring their families with them.

That changes the trajectory.

Because what starts as temporary migration becomes permanent settlement.

Now let’s look at the economic scale behind this.

The Philippines recorded around $38 billion in remittances in 2024, consistently accounting for roughly 8% to 9% of GDP.

That is not a side story.

That is one of the pillars of the Philippine economy.

At the same time, the country has built a second global channel through the BPO industry:

Roughly $38–40 billion in annual revenue
Over 1.8 million jobs

So the Philippines is doing something structurally unique:

It is exporting both labor and services at scale.

Now the real question:

Can 10.7 million become 20 million?

In the next 10 years?

That is unlikely.

It would require an aggressive acceleration in migration that current systems may not support.

But over a longer horizon — 20 to 30 years — the answer becomes much more realistic.

Because the drivers are still in place:

• Wage differentials remain large
• Developed countries face aging populations
• Demand for healthcare workers, engineers, and service professionals continues to rise
• Immigration pathways in countries like Canada and Australia remain open
• Global mobility is increasing, not decreasing

In other words:

The pipeline is still active.

But here’s where the narrative shifts.

Most discussions frame this as a problem:

“Brain drain.”
“Loss of talent.”
“People leaving.”

That framing is incomplete.

Because it ignores a much more powerful reality:

This is also a global network.

A Filipino working in Dubai, London, Toronto, or New York is not just earning.

They are:

Sending money
Building savings
Investing in property
Supporting families
Creating cross-border economic links

Over time, they become something else entirely:

Capital allocators.

So the real question is not:

“Will more Filipinos leave?”

They already are.

The real question is:

What does the Philippines do with a 10–20 million strong global population?

Because that is where the opportunity is.

If managed correctly, this is not just migration.

This is leverage.

Countries spend decades trying to expand their global influence.

The Philippines already has it.

Through its people.

And if the number reaches 15 million… or even 20 million over time…

Then what we are looking at is not a labor story anymore.

It is a global Filipino economic system.

The future of the Philippines may not just be built within its borders.

It may be built across them.

If this made you see the Filipino story differently, share it.

Because this is not just migration.

This is strategy.
