HEART OF GOLD

Skateboarding athlete Margielyn Didal won a gold medal in the 2018 Asian Games. She had many TV guestings after the event.
After one show, she ate lunch with us. We went to a restaurant in front of the TV station. While we were ordering food, Margielyn suddenly went out. We thought she didn’t like the food. But we soon learned that it was because she saw a poor old lady begging for alms beside the restaurant we were in.
The old lady was with her three grandchildren. We thought Margielyn would give them food. To our surprise, she brought the kids and the old lady into the restaurant and made them eat with us. Before we left the restaurant, she gave them money, too. I was floored when I witnessed her kindness.
Then she told us her story. She was once a street kid in Cebu who had nothing. She had to work as a parking attendant to earn money for food and to rent a skateboard. Now that she’s earning from winning in skateboarding, she wants to give back to those in need. Monty Mendigoria
