Westpac PNG

Westpac PNG We have a long history that stems back more than a century, when the Bank of New South Wales established its first branch in Fiji in 1901.

We were the first bank in Papua New Guinea
and we’ve been by your side ever since,
helping create a brighter financial future for you
and for generations to come. Nine years later, the first branch in Papua New Guinea opened. Our role in the Pacific is more than simply providing banking and financial services. It's about being part of the stability and security of a sound financial system, play

ing an integral role in the local economy and contributing to the social and environmental wellbeing of local communities.

Forty years is more than a career. It's a lifetime of growth, change and commitment.

When Gethrude Lelai joined Westpac PNG four decades ago, banking looked very different. Transactions were recorded in handwritten ledgers, processes were manual, and the digital tools we rely on today were still years away.

Over the past 40 years, Gethrude has experienced every stage of that evolution firsthand - growing alongside the bank as both banking and Papua New Guinea continued to develop and change.

What has kept her motivated throughout the years is a genuine love for solving problems and making a difference. "When something isn't working, I like being part of the solution and seeing it fixed motivates me to keep going."

That mindset has seen her progress throughout her career and become a trusted leader within our International Service Centre, where she now serves as Manager.

While technology, systems and ways of working have transformed over the years, one thing has remained constant: Gethrude's commitment to learning, adapting and supporting those around her.

Today, she encourages the next generation to embrace that same mindset. "Stay curious, be open to learning, and lead with integrity."

Her story is a powerful reminder that a meaningful career isn't built overnight. It's built through years of learning, growing and showing up with purpose.

We're incredibly proud to celebrate Gethrude's remarkable 40-year journey.

Some relationships are built to last. And we're here for the long run.

As part of National Book Week, Westpac PNG Chief Executive, Andrew Cairns, joined students from Wardstrip and Philip Aravure Primary School's at the National Library for a storytelling session through the Read Wantaim Pikinini Program.

One of the most memorable parts of the morning was watching students choose the stories they wanted to hear. Their questions, imagination and excitement reminded us just how important reading is in helping children learn, grow and dream big.

We're proud to support initiatives that encourage literacy and help build brighter futures for young Papua New Guineans. 💙📚

When Marvirg joined the Westpac PNG Graduate Program, he thought he was simply starting his first job.

Instead, he began a journey that transformed the way he viewed work, leadership and his role in Papua New Guinea's financial future.

Like many graduates, he arrived with strong academic foundations but limited real-world experience. Through rotations across the bank, he quickly discovered that banking is about much more than money - it's about trust, people and helping communities move forward.

From learning about risk through practical, everyday examples to contributing to meaningful work across multiple teams, each experience helped build confidence, curiosity and the courage to speak up.

One lesson stood out above all others: banking is deeply connected to the lives of people and businesses across PNG. Every decision, process and interaction has a role in helping customers grow, succeed and plan.

Supported by mentors, leaders and colleagues who invested in his development, he never felt like "just a grad". He felt valued, trusted and empowered to learn.

Today, he reflects on the programme with gratitude for the confidence, purpose and perspective it provided.

Future leaders aren't only shaped in classrooms. They're shaped through opportunity, experience and people who believe in their potential.

And we’re here to support them.
