The Rule of 72
This simple formula tells you how long it will take your money to double if you have one of two variables: The time or the periodic interest. Example: If you can get 4% a month, 72/4=18. So at 4% a month your money would double in 18 months.

If you have a time limit, it will tell you what return you need to get to double in the prescribed time. For example: You want to retire in 5 years, or 60 months and you are wanting to double your current nest egg: 72/60 = 1.2% per month is what you would need to accomplish that.
