"Novated lease" sounds like jargon. It is simpler than it sounds.

Your employer leases the car, the payments come out of your pay before tax, and you drive it like your own. In Australia those EVs are exempt from fringe benefit tax, which is what makes the numbers work.

New Zealand has a lower tax rate on employer-provided EVs (from April 2027), but no exemption.

In Australia, ordinary earners lease new EVs straight out of their pre-tax pay, and the usual tax on a vehicle benefit does not apply. It is a big reason so many Australians are driving new electric cars.

New Zealand has no equivalent scheme. Rewiring Aotearoa is backing one, called the EV Salary Boost.

About $3,000 a year off the power bill. That is the average opportunity for New Zealand households using Cogo, based on the upgrades they are considering, across more than 43,000 New Zealand homes.

And that doesn’t include the car. Hot water, heating, cooking, solar. Savings on fuel by switching the car sit on top of that.

Which upgrade should you do first?

Whatever your house is doing worst. A 1960s place with an old cylinder and a gas heater needs something completely different to a new build with a heat pump already on the wall.

If you want a rule of thumb though, start with whatever runs constantly. Hot water runs all year. Heating runs all winter. That is where the money is.

Less than 4% of Kiwi homes have solar on the roof. In Australia it is about 33%.

RNZ found the highest rate in Wānaka at 17%.

Worth remembering solar is not the only way to bring a power bill down. Hot water and space heating form a significant part of a typical bill, and both are usually cheaper to sort than buying solar.

☀️ When home energy upgrades are mentioned, solar panels usually come to mind. Hot water heat pumps are less thought of, but quote requests via Cogo show that's changing.

Of the upgrade quote requests New Zealand homeowners have sent to installers through Cogo, the second most popular is for a hot water heat pump: 27%.

Solar panels alone, or with a battery: 41%. Heat pump for space heating: 20%.

Heating and hot water upgrades together make up just under half of all quote requests. Which figures, since hot water alone is about 30% of household energy use.

Powerswitch and Cogo have teamed up.

Powerswitch, run by the not-for-profit Consumer NZ, tells you whether you are on the cheapest power plan. Worth doing, and they say the average user can save around $450 a year.

Already a few hundred people have run their place through it, and on average it is showing them just under $3,000 a year in potential savings from the upgrades it finds, on top of whatever a better plan saves.

41% of New Zealanders are going without heating to save money. That's from Consumer NZ's report out on 6 August.

Almost one in five have cut back on food or other essentials to pay a power bill this winter. More than 30,000 households were disconnected last year for not being able to pay. Power bills have overtaken housing as our second-biggest financial worry, behind only food.

Most of that is structural, and Consumer NZ is campaigning on exactly that. It's not something a smarter hot water timer fixes.

There are two ways to reduce heating costs that are free or heavily funded in the meantime:

Your hot water is about 30% of what your home uses, and your cylinder doesn't mind when it heats. Since 1 July the big retailers have had to offer a cheaper off-peak plan, so savings can be made by changing it to heat at the times of day power costs less.

Warmer Kiwi Homes also covers 50% to 90% of insulation costs for eligible pre-2008 homes. Insulation means less heating is needed, rather than having to go without.

Now, of the 841 solar requests Kiwi homeowners have sent to installers through Cogo, 437 have asked for a battery too. More than half.

Only about one in five of the country's existing solar homes actually has one.
