A heat pump costs about a quarter as much to run as a bar or column heater, on EECA's numbers. It moves heat in from outside instead of making it, so it puts out about three times more heat than the power it uses.

Plug-in heaters are still fine for small rooms. For the living room, a heat pump is where the savings are.

Electric car registrations roughly tripled in the three months to September, as petrol climbed to $3.35 a litre. Battery EVs and plug-in hybrids were 19% of cars registered, up from 7% a year earlier (Infometrics, via RNZ).

Getting solar quotes? EECA's checklist is a good place to start.

Get two or three, from installers who come and look at your place. Make sure each quote covers the lot, from scaffolding to consents to the meter. And EECA says warranties should be at least 5 years on workmanship and 10 on the panels.

And ask what's behind each savings estimate, because different assumptions can make quotes look miles apart.

Four parties want to help you pay for solar, and election day is 7 November.

National: a low-interest loan, repaid through your rates over ten years. Labour: a similar loan, plus a $3,000 kickstart subsidy for low and middle-income families. Greens: zero-interest loans and a renters' right to solar. Opportunity: low-interest loans for going electric at home, through councils. Act says banks already offer interest-free solar loans.

Nearly one in four new passenger cars registered in NZ in August was a plug-in, up from about one in ten a year earlier. That's the Motor Industry Association's count.

Thinking about an EV? Where you'll charge it is what decides the savings.

EECA says around 80% of EV owners do more than half their charging at home. You'll want off-street parking and a proper charger. The plug-in one that comes with many EVs is fine as a backup, but EECA says it isn't meant to be your main way to charge.

Petrol's averaging about $3.40 a litre and the AA can't see it falling.

On EECA's 2024 figures, 100km in a petrol car cost about $19. An EV charged at home off-peak was about $11. But an EV on a public fast charger was about $19 too, the same as petrol.
