Cash. Bonds. Property. Shares. Alternatives. What role does each actually play?

Each comes with different characteristics, risks and potential returns. More importantly, each can play a different role within an investment portfolio.

Our latest Investing 101 article breaks down the main asset classes in straightforward terms, from the stability and accessibility of cash through to the long-term growth potential of shares.

Meet Adam.

Adam brings more than 20 years of financial market experience to our Wānaka team, having worked across New Zealand, the UK and Hong Kong.

Alongside advising clients, Adam serves on the boards of Winter Games NZ and Mitre 10 Ferrymead, and on Plunket NZ's investment committee.

90 years. A lot has changed. Some things haven't.

Forsyth Barr started as a small sharebroking firm in Dunedin in 1936. This year, we're celebrating 90 years in business.

In that time, we've seen markets rise and fall, technology transform how we invest, and generations of New Zealanders build, protect and pass on their wealth.

But one thing has remained pretty constant: good advice starts with understanding the person behind the portfolio.

We're proud to be part of that story here in Central Otago - helping local people make considered decisions about what they've built and where they're heading next.

It might be a familiar saying, but it’s also one of the most important lessons in investing.

Diversification is about spreading your investments so your financial future doesn’t depend too heavily on one company, sector, country or type of investment.

Our latest Investing 101 article breaks down why diversification matters, how it can help manage risk, and why even a well-diversified portfolio needs a little maintenance over time.

Simple principles. Long-term thinking. A good place to start if you’re building your investment knowledge.

What a week last week.

As the New Zealand Mountain Film Festival wraps up for another year, we'd like to say a huge congratulations to everyone involved in bringing it to life.

From the organisers and volunteers through to the filmmakers, speakers and festival-goers, it's events like this that make winter in Wanaka so special.

We're proud to have supported the festival as a Gold Sponsor and to play a small part in an event that celebrates adventure, storytelling and the mountain culture that so many of us love.

A particular highlight for us was supporting Session 7 and hearing from local mountain guide Petrouchka Steiner-Grierson alongside an inspiring lineup of films celebrating women in the mountains.

Thanks for another fantastic festival!

A great couple of days on the Cromwell Golf Course at the Last Minute Gin Brass Monkey Tournament.

Thanks to everyone who stopped by the 9th hole for a steak sandwich, a Fireball and a chat. It was fantastic to catch up with so many familiar faces and enjoy a bit of Central Otago winter sunshine.

Thanks to BDO New Zealand for having us involved.
