Congratulations to the winners of the 2025 Winter Crop Competition and to Rotary Wanaka for putting the event on. We were proud to support the event by supplying auction items and by going along on the night. This outstanding event brought together the rural community in support of a great cause — raising over $50,000 for Otago Southland Rescue Helicopter Trust and the Tarras, Luggate and Hawea fire brigades. A huge thank you to all the sponsors, organisers, and competitors for your dedication and generosity. A truly excellent evening celebrating the best of our region. 👏

Great to be able to support this local film festival with some amazing adventures and inspiring stories (thanks Beth Rodden!) for our local community. Well done to Mark Sedon and Jo Sedon all the team at the NZ Mountain Film Festival for putting on another very successful event.

Wānaka recently hosted five days of awe-inspiring, action-packed events celebrating the 23rd year of the NZ Mountain Film & Book Festival. Forsyth Barr Central Otago was proud to sponsor Session Four, which featured guest speaker Beth Rodden—widely regarded as one of the greatest rock climbers of all time. Beth shared her powerful story from Kyrgyzstan, as featured in her book A Light Through the Cracks https://www.bethrodden.com/.

The evening also included the NZ premieres of Trango, La Rubia, Third Order Island, and A Team Sport—films showcasing human resilience, elite athleticism, and extraordinary adventure. A night celebrating the edge of human potential.

It's not too late to catch more: the Festival continues today in Queenstown (26–27 June).

The Chips Are Down: Silicon Valley Bank Failure

The collapse of Silicon Valley Bank over the weekend was the biggest US bank failure since the Global Financial Crisis. The bank was the 16th largest bank in the US and had branches across the world, including in the UK, China, Europe, India, Canada, and Israel. Regulators have jumped in with efforts to prevent contagion across the banking sector and economy.

New Zealand tourism: 100% Pure at 70% Capacity.

COVID-19 border closures in March 2020 took tourism, one of New Zealand’s most important industries, from hero to zero literally overnight. The next couple of years of tight border controls and periodic domestic lockdowns was painful for a sector reliant on international visitors.

Good look at our falling but still historically high house prices and that further falls are possible and actually positive for the economy.

- House prices are tumbling...and that's okay

New Zealand’s extreme house prices have been exposed by rising mortgage rates, tightened bank lending, and a building boom that’s finally delivering enough houses. House prices have already experienced the largest nominal decline on record, down an average of -14% across the country. We suspect there is more to come.
