We’ve decided today is “National Buy Yourself Something from a Local Business Day” 😄

Is it official? Absolutely not.
Did we just make it up? Yes.

Should we all still take part? We think so. 😉

Whether it’s a coffee, a bunch of flowers, something delicious from a local bakery, a little gift, or something you’ve had your eye on for a while, choosing local is a lovely way to support the businesses that help make our communities what they are.

Every purchase, recommendation and share can mean a lot to a small business.

So consider this your very unofficial permission slip to treat yourself locally today. And feel free to tell others about our brand-new “national day” too! ❤️

What local business are you supporting today?

A little PAYE reminder for our fellow business owners 📌

If you employ staff, 20 October is an important date to have on your calendar.

For many employers, PAYE and other employment deductions relating to September are due to Inland Revenue on 20 October.

With payroll, customers, jobs, suppliers and everything else involved in running a business, these dates can sneak up quickly. Keeping on top of PAYE helps keep your payroll obligations organised and avoids that last-minute scramble.

If you’re unsure what’s due, or would simply like some help keeping your payroll and bookkeeping on track, the OMS team is here to support you.

When you’re busy running a business, bookkeeping can easily become one of those jobs you’ll “get to later”.

Between customers, staff, quotes, jobs, suppliers and everything else that needs your attention, it’s easy for the books to fall behind.

But when your bookkeeping isn’t up to date, it can also become harder to see what’s coming in, what’s going out, what needs paying and where the business currently stands financially.

And bookkeeping is about much more than entering numbers. Keeping your accounts organised means you have clearer financial information available when you need it, whether you’re checking cash flow, following up invoices, preparing for GST or simply trying to make a better-informed business decision.

If you’re spending your evenings chasing receipts, reconciling accounts, checking invoices and catching up on bookkeeping admin, having the right support can also give you valuable time back to focus on your customers, team and business.

A bookkeeper can be a practical extra pair of hands behind the scenes, helping keep the financial side of the business organised and up to date.

If your bookkeeping is starting to feel like another job on top of running your business, we’d be happy to have a chat about how we can support you.

A big congratulations to Maxine! 🎉

Maxine is now a Xero Level 2 Certified Professional and a Xero Payroll Specialist.

We’re so proud to see her continuing to build her knowledge and skills.

For us at OMS, continuing professional development is about more than completing certifications.

It’s about bringing that knowledge back into the everyday work we do with our clients, so we can keep helping Central Otago businesses feel more organised, more confident, and better supported.

Every new skill strengthens the support we’re able to offer, and this is another wonderful step forward for Maxine and the OMS team.

Well done, Maxine. Very well deserved! 👏

Not sure when GST starts to apply to your business?

GST stands for Goods and Services Tax, and in New Zealand it is charged at 15% on most goods and services.

For business owners, GST can affect more than just what you charge your customers. It can also impact how you set your prices, prepare invoices, record expenses and complete your GST returns.

One important number to keep an eye on is $60,000. If your taxable turnover reaches this amount within a 12-month period, you’ll generally need to register for GST.

And once you’re registered, keeping your records accurate becomes even more important so you know what GST you’ve collected, what you may be able to claim back, and what needs to be paid to Inland Revenue.

If GST is starting to feel a little confusing, you don’t have to work it all out on your own.

OMS can help you understand what applies to your business and keep everything organised behind the scenes.

A little peek at my desk 😊

I’m definitely one of those people who works better when things are organised and the space around me feels nice.

There’s usually plenty happening here with client work, emails, paperwork, notes and all the little jobs that come with running a business, so having everything where I can find it really helps.

I also love having a nice view while I work. It helps me feel relaxed, clears my head a little, and makes those busy days feel much nicer.

And of course, the flowers help too 🌸

A lot of the behind-the-scenes work at OMS happens right here, helping our clients stay organised while I do my best to keep myself organised too 😉

You probably started your business because you love your trade, enjoy helping clients or had a great idea you wanted to bring to life.

Then somehow receipts, bank reconciliations, payroll and GST quietly joined your job description. 😂

Fortunately, some of us really did choose bookkeeping on purpose.

Yes, we are those people who get a little too excited when the numbers balance. 🤓❤️

If bookkeeping was never part of your business dream, OMS would be happy to take some of it off your hands.

Happy Friday from the OMS team!

Sometimes the loveliest feedback arrives in a handwritten card. ❤️

We recently received this beautiful note from one of our clients in Cromwell:

“Just a wee gift of our appreciation for sorting out the IRD for us. Hope you are keeping well and we look forward to catching up with you next year.”

Little messages like this really do mean so much to us. It’s always lovely knowing that the support we provide has helped make things a little easier for our clients.

Thank you for the kind words and thoughtful card. We truly appreciate it. ❤️

Fergus, Xero and MYOB can all play an important role in a trades business, but they don’t all do the same job. 🔧📊

Fergus is designed around what’s happening out on the jobs, including quoting, scheduling, crew time, materials, job progress and job costing.

Xero or MYOB supports the wider accounting side of the business, including bank transactions, payroll, GST/PAYE and financial reporting.

For trades businesses using Fergus, the real value comes from having your job management and accounting systems working together clearly.

That means knowing:
✔️ Which system handles each part of the workflow
✔️ Where job and financial information should be entered
✔️ How information moves between your systems
✔️ Who in your team is responsible for each step

If you’re already using Xero and mainly need accounting and financial records, you may be able to manage without Fergus.

But once you’re juggling crews, schedules, job progress, materials and job costs, Fergus can add another layer of visibility and structure to the day-to-day running of the business.

Swipe through the carousel for a simple breakdown of how Fergus works alongside Xero or MYOB. 👉

Need help getting your systems working together more smoothly? OMS can help with Fergus, Xero and MYOB setup, training and support, along with ongoing bookkeeping, payroll, GST/PAYE and administration.
