TOYOTA GAZOO Racing New Zealand has confirmed huge interest from junior formulae teams worldwide keen to be part of the new Gen 2 Formula Regional car era set to begin in the Oceania region in January 2027.

No fewer than 15 existing teams have submitted expressions of interest as part of the tendering process, including all six of the incumbent teams who took part in the successful 2026 championship.

Teams interested come from categories from Formula 4 through to FIA Formula 2.

“Obviously we are thrilled to have such interest from the sport globally and it’s a sure sign that the New Zealand-based series is on the radar of virtually all of the professional junior formulae teams around the world,” said TGRNZ Motorsport Manager Nicolas Caillol.

Toby Elmiger took his turn on the top step of the podium in the final race of the weekend at round one of the Toyota 86 Trophy Series at Hampton Downs.

Nieko Scoles – arguably the fastest man across the whole weekend – had to settle for another runner-up spot in a race that finished with the final four laps under the Safety Car.

Elmiger’s win was his first in a Toyota 86 and with Nathan Grammer winning the first race and Ajay Giddy the second, it meant three different winners from the three races over the first Trophy weekend.

Toby was rightly pleased to have held off Scoles in what is already shaping up to be a closely fought contest over the next few weeks.
