In many cases, your life and health insurance options can change once a medical condition has been diagnosed.

That’s why it can be worthwhile reviewing your cover before undertaking major testing or investigations, especially if your policy hasn’t been reviewed in years.

It’s not about fear or worst-case thinking.

It’s about making informed decisions with clear information and understanding what protections you already have in place.

If you’ve been meaning to review your cover, this is your gentle nudge to have a quick and easy conversation. ☺️

The free National Bowel Screening Programme is currently available:
• For most people aged 60–74
• For Māori and Pasifika from age 50

If you’re not eligible for the free programme yet, it doesn’t mean screening is not worth considering.

One of the biggest challenges with bowel cancer is that symptoms can often be overlooked or dismissed early on.
Gut health checks are one of those things many people put in the “I’ll get around to eventually” category.

This month is a good reminder not to leave it too long.

Property insurance covers the physical damage.

Business Interruption Insurance covers what happens next.

It can help with:
• Lost gross profit
• Ongoing operating expenses
• Temporary relocation costs
• Increased costs of working
• Payroll commitments

The challenge is that recovery often takes longer than expected.
Rebuild delays.
Consent delays.
Supply chain issues.
Staff retention challenges.

If your indemnity period is too short, you may find support stops before recovery is complete.

We explore this in more detail in our latest article.

Our legs are still recovering but…

What a result from the Financial Independence 1000m Team Relay a few months ago!

With the help of some fantastic local businesses, the event raised over $5,000 for Athletics Tauranga to support local athletics and the athletes coming through.

A huge thank you to every team that entered, competed, and brought plenty of energy to the day. It was great to see businesses come together for some healthy competition and a very good cause.

Congratulations to Craigs Investment Partners, who took out the win with their 10-person team in an impressive 2:12.

That time was:
• Just 1 second outside the world record for an individual
• 5 seconds quicker than Sam Ruthe’s age group world best

Not bad for a relay team.
Thanks again to everyone involved.
We’re already looking forward to the next one.

This week we had a pretty special surprise visit from Tauranga Boys' College.

Dan Barback, the new Captain of the TBC Track and Field team, stopped in to present Ben with a thank you on behalf of the school for the long-standing support that Financial Independence has shown to TBC athletics and track and field over the years.

Supporting young people, local sport, and the communities around us has always been important to our team, so moments like this genuinely mean a lot.

A big thank you to Dan and the team for taking the time to come in and share this with us. We’re proud to continue supporting the next generation of athletes coming through.

We’re pleased to welcome Ben Shirley to Financial Independence.

Ben joins us following the merger of his specialist employee benefits business into Financial Independence, bringing more than 20 years of experience in group health and risk solutions.

Ben specialises in helping businesses provide meaningful employee benefits, particularly group health insurance, life cover, trauma cover and income protection. His focus is on helping companies support their people in practical ways that genuinely make a difference. From covering pre-existing conditions through group schemes to structuring benefits that help attract and retain great staff, Ben loves to work with employers who care deeply about their teams.

After many years running his own business, Ben made the considered decision to merge with Financial Independence. The alignment in values, long-term thinking, and genuine care for clients made it the right next step. Ben remains the adviser to his existing clients, now backed by the wider expertise and support of the FI team.

At the heart of Ben’s work is relationships. He believes in giving clear, transparent advice and building partnerships that last.

Outside of work, life revolves around family, sport, and community. If he’s not working with clients, you’ll likely find him at the beach, on the sidelines of a sports field, or enjoying time with his family.

We’re proud to have you on the team, Ben.

Supporting the work that strengthens our community.
At Financial Independence, giving back has always been an important part of who we are. Each year, we commit to donating to this amazing organisation.TECT has made a meaningful impact in the Bay of Plenty for many years, and we’re proud to play a small part in helping that work continue.

For us, business has always been about more than transactions. It is about relationships, responsibility, and using what we do to create positive outcomes where we can.

We’re grateful for the opportunity to support an organisation doing such valuable work in our community.

You can rebuild walls.
Rebuilding momentum is harder.

This type of cover is designed to stabilise a business during downtime and protect its long-term viability.

The key questions are:
• Is your projected gross profit accurate?

• Is your indemnity period realistic?

• Have you reviewed it since your business last scaled?

We unpack these questions in our full article.

A small but important addition to what we offer at Financial Independence. You may have seen PPS mentioned more frequently across the insurance market recently.

PPS Mutual is a specialist life insurer focused on professionals, offering cover such as income protection, life, and disability insurance designed around how professionals earn and work. This is particularly relevant for people in fields like medicine, engineering, law, and accounting, where income structures and career pathways can differ from the general market.

What makes PPS different is its structure.

Unlike most insurers, PPS operates as a mutual. That means it is owned by its members, and eligible policyholders may share in the long-term financial performance of the business through a profit share benefit.

It is also not available through every adviser. PPS works with a select group of accredited advisers, which allows for a more considered and specialised approach to advice.

At Financial Independence, we don’t tend to make a lot of noise about new capabilities, but we do think it’s important our clients understand the range of options available to them.

We’re pleased to be part of that accredited group and able to advise on PPS alongside the broader solutions we already provide.

As always, our role remains the same.
To understand your situation properly, and then recommend what genuinely fits.

If you’ve come across PPS and are curious about how it works from an insurance perspective, we’re always happy to talk it through.
