We investment types love putting things into categories or themes, and shares are no exception.

Two of the most common labels are “growth” and “value”, which are terms investors have used for decades to describe different types of companies and investment styles.

Wills Month is a chance to think about the legacy you'd like to leave for the people and causes you care about.

For Lilian Tangaere-Baldwin, that means supporting better outcomes for her Gisborne-Tairāwhiti community.

After seeing her brother Ben navigate dialysis treatment, and witnessing the gaps in care for Māori and Pasifika patients, Lilian was inspired to give back.

Today, she's a regular donor to The Sunrise Foundation's Dialysis Endowment Fund and has also chosen to leave a gift in her will to Sunrise's General Fund, helping ensure support continues for future generations.

New research highlights an emerging opportunity in wealth and estate planning.

A recent report from Community Foundations of Aotearoa NZ and BERL found that more than half of New Zealanders surveyed (52.3% of 3,000) are open to leaving a charitable gift in their will, with many saying it reflects their personal values.

The research also found that charitable giving is rarely discussed during financial or legal advice conversations, despite growing interest from Kiwis. With an estimated $1.6 trillion expected to be transferred between generations over the next 25 years, the findings highlight the importance of having broader conversations about the legacy people want their wealth to leave.

It's a reminder that estate planning is not just about passing on wealth, but also about supporting the causes that matter most to you.

Investors have spent much of 2026 focused on growth. Bond markets are forcing attention back to debt and deficits.

As central bankers gather at Jackson Hole, the market's next direction may depend on what happens in the bond market rather than the sharemarket.

There’s lots of nervousness about sharemarket valuations at the moment.

That’s understandable, especially regarding the US market which has more than tripled in value since the end of 2018.

How should investors be thinking about valuations right now, and is it a good time to put capital to work?
