🔥 Big change coming to insurance costs in 2026 — and most people don’t realise it yet

From 1 July 2026, the way Fire and Emergency NZ (FENZ) levies are calculated is changing.

At a glance, it looks minor.

It’s not.

👉 The key shift:
Levies will move from indemnity value → sum insured (full replacement value)

That means:
• Many commercial clients will see noticeable increases
• Motor policies will now have a flat levy (even third party)
• Residential clients may see small reductions

But here’s the part most people are missing…

💡 This isn’t just a cost increase — it’s a structuring issue

If your sums insured aren’t right, you could be:
• Paying more levy than you need to
• Over-insured in areas that don’t need it
• Carrying inefficiencies in your programme

We’re already reviewing this across our client base ahead of renewals.

I’ve been trying to find the words to say.

Last week my fellow members and I were told of the nominees for the Community Broker Network NZ awards.

I’m very humbled to have been nominated as Better Broker of the Year, and my company High Street Insurance Brokers nominated for Brokerage of the Year.

Congratulations to my fellow nominees unfortunately I am unable to attend the awards evening as I am away but I’m sure the night will be memorable and the winners extremely deserving.

My thanks to the panel that voted for us Alistair Monk Michelle Boyd, and a big thanks to the Folio.insure team who continue to provide us with awesome tech which helps us do what we do.

And last but by no means least, thank you to my clients and partners, we couldn’t do what we do without all of you.

It’s days like today we really love what we do. And not just the insurance side but the giving back.

At High Street Insurance Brokers we are absolutely delighted to be able to let two very worth causes know that we have been able to secure them funding from the Foundation.

Waipuna Hospice & Kidz Need Dadz Bay of Plenty will both receive funding from the latest round. And I know that they will both put the money very good use.
