A beautiful morning to go for my first walk in four months down to my local stream-mouth at Waiteti where I saw a bit of action from this visiting angler. Saw two rainbows caught among three fishers in an hour. A bit early for the main season on this western side of Lake Rotorua, but who cares when the sun is turning it on. Just being out there is enough to warm the spirit, calm the soul and sooth the mind. Waiteti and the other stream-mouths will fire when the lake heats up and stresses the fish, which will come in close in their thousands to find relief at the cold-water mouths and lake flats. They start showing up when the lake hits 18 degrees. It's about 14 at the moment. The bigger runs come in at 20 degrees, and 22 degrees is the magic number. We need at least a week of sunshine on the lake surface to get the heat rising. Sometimes the lake is hot enough by mid-November, but it is usually early December. The Big Unknown this summer will be the effect of the super El Nino that is pounding around harvesting cyclones out in the Pacific. Usually the lake gets lower and hotter during an El Nino and the fishing very good. Fingers crossed for a great summer season.
