The OCR was reduced again yesterday to 2.25%pa which is great news.
Will we see fixed rates go down further now? Not necessarily.
The markets listened to what was said by the Reserve Bank yesterday and not what the did. The Reserve Bank indicated that they felt this was the last decrease to the OCR and would only go lower if the wheels fell off the economy.
The early signs are that the economy is turning the corner.
This may be it for the OCR and it is likely to sit at this level for most of next year with the possibility of the OCR heading back up to neutral or above the year after.
This is all speculation however it does mean you need to start thinking about altering your strategy as going short may not be the best option going forward. Or even better have your lending split across different fixed terms to get the best of both worlds.
