Budget 2026 has dropped. We read it so you don't have to.

The short version? Not much has changed for small business owners. But there are a few things worth knowing - and one big thing the Government missed entirely.

Revenue's up. Team's in place. So why does it feel like the wheels have stopped turning?

That's the plateau. And it's usually the point where a business advisor stops being a "nice to have" and starts being the most commercially sound decision you make this year.

Here's what a business advisor actually does, how to know when the timing is right, and what we do differently at Bring On Monday.

This is why we put every client onto Xero.

Kirsten’s quick test: multiply the hours you spend on invoices, spreadsheets and chasing payments by your charge-out rate. That’s what doing it by hand is actually costing you.

Xero comes out cheaper every time.

With Stripe integrated, you’re paid instantly. And even Kirsten’s husband, who’s not exactly tech-savvy, runs his invoicing from the app on the fly.

That’s what a modern accounting firm does. Set up the tools properly so the system does the chasing, not you.

$6,000 saved. 15 minutes of work.
That's what happened in Adam's first fortnight with us.

This wasn't a trick. It was looking at his processes and asking the questions his last accountant didn't.

Most small businesses we meet are leaving money in the same places. Pricing. Margins. Quiet costs no one's questioned in years.

If you're not sure whether your business is actually paying you what it should, that's the conversation worth having.

We'll chase you for the info. You just need to say yes.

How do you value your time?

Don't waste it filing paper receipts that take up space, then chasing them down later.

If you work with us you know you don't need to! We've got the systems in place to make your life easier. (That's why we're a Xero certified Platinum Partner!)

Got a receipt? Snap a picture on your phone, email it straight to us, then throw it away. It really is that easy! Even if you aren't tech-savvy.

If your accountant proudly shows off a Xero badge on their website, here's the bit they probably haven't told you.

The badge has four tiers. Only one of them is a real signal that the firm actually lives in the platform, day in and day out.

We've broken it down in 8 slides, including the question to ask any accountant before you sign anything.

Ever had your accountant tell you you've had a good year, while your bank account tells a completely different story?

You're not alone. It's one of the most common (and most misunderstood) things in small business, and it has nothing to do with how hard you're working.

Profit and cash are not the same thing. The money your business has "made" on paper is often sitting in unpaid invoices, stock, your GST account, loan repayments, or already out the door as drawings. Real money. Just not in your account when you need it.

Danny put together a piece on this for the Academy that breaks down exactly where your cash goes and what to do about it. We've turned the highlights into a quick five-slide read.

Have a flick through. If it sounds familiar, that's a sign your numbers are doing their job. The next step is doing something about it.

Boring but important for this week! Your key GST and Provisional Tax dates for May 2026:

GST - due 7 May (for March/quarterly filers). Now’s the time to make sure everything is coded correctly before year-end. Don’t leave it until filing - clean data now = fewer surprises later.

Provisional Tax - next instalment due 7 May. Now’s a good time to check if your current year is tracking higher or lower than expected.

We’re on he hunt for another Business Advisor! Based in NZ | Flexible Location

This isn’t just a job - it’s a chance to play a real part in helping Kiwi businesses grow, thrive, and do their best work.

Bring On Monday is not your typical accounting firm. We’re business advisors, partners, mentors, and practical thinkers. We work with ambitious business owners who want more than spreadsheets - they want clarity, confidence, and freedom.

Now we’re looking for someone to join us in a pivotal role for our NZ business. You’ll help shape the journey, drive client relationships, and (if you’re the right fit) earn a piece of the pie in the long run.

You’ll be:
- Meeting with clients regularly (often online) - supporting them with business planning, financial clarity, and decision-making.

- Doing discovery calls and onboarding, turning great leads into long-term relationships.

- Bringing real-world business knowledge, not just crunching numbers but actually helping clients grow.

- Spotting insights understanding cash flow, margins, and performance.

- Working alongside our advisory and tax teams to help clients make bold, smart decisions.

You’re someone who:
- Has run your own business, or worked closely alongside founders and decision-makers.

- Understands numbers and has a working knowledge of the NZ tax system (or is keen to learn fast). You don’t need to be a CA, but if you are (and you’re outgoing and looking for a rewarding career change), that’s a bonus!

- Gets what business owners are really trying to do, and knows how to help them get there.

- Wants to grow with us, with competitive pay now and a long-term upside.

- Brings energy, ideas, and a proactive mindset, and is excited to use AI to work smarter, not harder!

This role is a mix of advisory, client management, and business development. You’re not stuck behind the screen crunching numbers - you’re talking to clients, solving problems, and helping build something real.

If you live and breathe business, and you want to be part of a tight-knit team doing work that matters - we’d love to hear from you! Apply here: https://bringonmonday.bamboohr.com/careers/38?source=aWQ9MjM%3D

$70,000 is a lot to leave parked in IRD's bank account.

We met with a client this month about his May provisional tax. The standard calculation had him paying $90K. After a proper forecast of where his business is actually tracking, the real number was $20K.

That's $70K that stays in his business, funding an investment he'd already planned, instead of sitting with IRD until we file his return and claim it back months later.

Most accountants only look at provisional tax when the invoice lands. By that point there's nothing to do except pay it.

If your business has shifted this year (and whose hasn't), the default provisional tax calculation probably doesn't reflect reality.

It's worth a second look before May hits!
