I’m no apologist for organised crime, but NZ’s underworld is going through a unique event.

Never before has it had the sudden importation of a criminal fraternity that is far more violent than they are.

2000 ‘501s’ have been forcibly removed from Australia and deported here under threat of being renditioned to Christmas Island. Many left NZ as children and have no roots here. 40% reoffend, and there is a sizeable chunk who have seen how much less violent the domestic crime scene is and have started a gang war as they take over the drug trade.

Pasifika and Māori people make up only 20 per cent of the people who have received Covid-19 vaccinations so far – and that is concerning, a Pacific leader and a health expert say.

The latest figures from the Ministry of Health show that as of midnight on March 23, a total of 41,477 doses of Pfizer vaccine had been administered in New Zealand.

Fewer than 9000 of those doses have gone to Pasifika and Māori people.

Of those vaccinated so far, Māori and Pasifika people make up 20 per cent. “You would expect more,” lecturer says.

You might expect a catering business to be suffering after a year of Covid-19, but Pacific Soul Food is booming.

Business administrator Etereoa Lafaele says while it was easier to do business before the pandemic hit, it’s exceeded expectations over the past 12 months.

Every week over the past couple of months there has been an event and the business only relied on the wage subsidy once, during the first alert level 4 lockdown in March last year.

You might expect a catering business to be suffering after a year of Covid-19, but Pacific Soul Foods is booming. It's not the only one.

A hip hop artist turned community advocate is speaking out against a growing number of liquor stores being granted approvals and licenses in South Auckland, which she calls "not good for our kids".

“Having an extra liquor store – it’s just not good for our kids,” Shirl'e Fruean says.

Helping children become future leaders can be done in simple steps, and one of New Zealand's favourite fruit companies is encouraging Kiwis to empower the next generation to protect our environment.

Dole - a global fruit producer with ambitious sustainability commitments - has a core philosophy to educate others to live more sustainably, starting with kids. The Dole Promise draws on the spirit of Sampo Yoshi, an 18th century Japanese philosophy that aims for a triple-win scenario, where business is good for the seller, the buyer and the community.

SPONSORED: Empower your kids to become sustainability leaders and create a legacy for the future.

It was not the horticulture or science students who first spotted the potential of the empty piece of land next to Manurewa High in south Auckland, now a full-fledged māra kai feeding thousands in the community.

It was the students in the school’s award-winning Business Academy.

In south Auckland, a school project transform valuable but unused land into a productive and sustainable urban oasis and food farm.
