π October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month! π
Did you know that over 360,000 people will be diagnosed with breast cancer worldwide in 2024? In New Zealand, it affects one in nine women throughout their lives.
Early detection is keyβbreast cancers found at stage one or two have a 92% survival rate. However, 15% of diagnoses are still late-stage, a statistic that hasnβt changed in over a decade.
As of October 1, 2024, Pharmac will fund Pembrolizumab (Keytruda) for eligible patients with advanced triple-negative breast cancer. Sadly, many effective treatments, like Tecentriq, remain unfunded despite being approved.

In New Zealand, the median survival rate for advanced breast cancer is just 16 months, compared to over 32 months globally. Access to new medicines is crucial, yet New Zealand lags behind other OECD countries in funding and availability.
