Greytown Wheels Park

Greytown Wheels Park This page shares updates and ways to support community fundraising for the next stages of the Wheels and Play Park in Greytown, South Wairarapa.

Our first stage, the skatepark, opened in late 2025. Fundraising is underway for the Pump Track. The South Wairarapa District Council has acknowledged the need for a youth play space for young and old in Greytown in the 2021-2031 Long Term Plan. SWDC already own 4 - 6 Pierce Street, (adjacent to the Rail Trail and Dog Park) and this is the location of Greytown's future integrated wheels park and p

lay space. This will be a family orientated facility, for Greytown residents and visitors to our town. $1,000,000 is proposed to be spent in the 2021/22 financial year to develop the site. It will be 100% funded from reserve contributions that developers pay when they subdivide land. THIS PROPOSAL WILL HAVE ZERO IMPACT ON RATES. Feel free to call Sid Kempton 02102900843 to discuss this.

You won't land that kickflip first time. But when you finally do 👌.

These things take persistence. As does building a wheels park 😁.

If you want to help us out with the next fundraising stage (the Pump Track), fill in our volunteer form in the comments.

Young, old, skater, mountain biker, business owner, passionate community member...this is a community build, which means you're all part of the crew!

Here's Arden from landing a trick at the Papa Ora Skatepark last weekend. 👏

Arden is a Carterton local and regularly comes to Greytown with his grandmother for a ride down at the skatepark.

Go check out his Instagram () and see him pulling off some awesome tricks. He's won some big comps and is sponsored by .

What's pretty cool about his page is that he doesn't just show himself always landing the move, but also the practice and some failed attempts in the process. It's a great reminder that getting good at anything takes persistence, a whole lot of effort, and some good protective equipment!

Keep shredding, Arden. We can't wait to see what you land next! 🛴💥

Got a great Papa Ora skatepark clip? Send it through to us. Whether it's your first drop-in or your latest trick, we'd love to see it!

Are there any local Charitable Trusts or Incorporated Societies that would consider "umbrellaing" the Pump Track project?

We have spoken to people who have worked on similar projects and this was a super helpful step.

If you know of any organisations that might be keen, please share with them - we'd love to have a chat and see if it would work for them.

🌱 What is umbrellaing?
Umbrellaing is when an established organisation provides a legal and financial home for a project. This can include holding funds, providing governance oversight, and helping meet funding and reporting requirements.

As we are not currently a Charitable Trust or Incorporated Society, umbrellaing would allow us to apply for grants that would otherwise be unavailable to us at present, helping us get started and grow while we build our own capacity.

Hi 👋 We’re the new volunteers taking over fundraising for the next stages of Greytown's Papa Ora Wheels and Play Park.

These next stages won’t have Council funding, so bringing them to life is going to be a real community effort.

We’re just two local parents with jobs, young kids and no experience at doing any of this. But we love to see how well the skatepark is used and want to keep the momentum going.

We definitely don’t have all the answers and are learning as we go, so if you’ve got skills in:

-Doing accounts for a Trust
-Fundraising, sponsorship or events
-Governance/board experience
-Project management
or you’re a young person keen to get involved, we’d love to hear from you!

Fill in the survey in the comments 👇

And a little reminder to keep things kind. This project is for the kids and community, and everyone involved is doing their best ✌️

Over the past few weeks we've been surveying users of the skatepark and local schools about what they would most like next at the wheels park.

Thanks to everyone who completed our survey - we managed to get over 80 responses and there was a clear favourite: the Pump Track! So that's what we will be focusing our fundraising efforts on first.

Watch this space for more updates shortly.

A huge shout out to Sid Kempton for driving this skatepark vision over the past 10+ years. What an incredible addition for Greytown and the wider South Wairarapa. Thanks so much Sid!
